Huff and Hertford Named Pac-12 Lacrosse Players of the Week
April 01, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse, Features
The Trojan sophomores helped the Women of Troy extend to a nine-game winning streak with three wins last week
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse sophomore midfielder Kelsey Huff (Eastport, N.Y.) and goalie Riley Hertford (Lake Oswego, Ore.) were named the Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 25-31, the Conference announced on Monday, April 1.
Huff is the fifth different Trojan to receive the league's weekly honor this year and is tabbed for her first-career award. Hertford is USC's first repeat selection of the season (March 18) and becomes just the third Trojan to be named for Pac-12 weekly honors twice in her career (Gussie Johns, Kerrigan Miller). The two selections are USC's ninth and 10th all-time Pac-12 weekly certificates.
Ranked 16th last week, the Women of Troy extended their winning streak to a season-long nine games (the third longest streak in program history) with three victories. First, USC defeated No. 20 Stanford at home, 10-9. The Trojans then went to the Bay Area and took down California, 19-7, and beat No. 20 Stanford a second time, 11-10, in double overtime, to improve to 12-1 on the season and remain undefeated in Pac-12 games at 7-0.
Huff was an unstoppable offensive force for the Trojans as she racked up three straight hat tricks to run her total to six on the season and 12 in her career (seventh all-time at USC). Huff scored 10 goals and had a .737 shots-on-goal percentage to go with eight ground balls, six caused turnovers, one draw control, and one decisive overtime game-winner on The Farm. Huff had three goals, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers in the first meeting with Stanford and then followed up with three goals, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers against Cal. In the second meeting with the Cardinal, Huff collected four goals and had an assist to tie her career high for points (5) and added two ground balls, a caused turnover, and a draw control. She ranks third in the Pac-12 for goals (30) and is fourth in total points (35) and third in shots (77).
Hertford went 171 minutes in the cage and picked up three wins with a .582 save percentage and 10.67 saves per game. She had an 8.04 goals-against average in the three games and picked up 11 ground balls. At home against the Cardinal, Hertford tied the second-highest total in USC history with 17 saves and picked up four ground balls in the process. At California, Hertford faced 15 shots and picked up seven saves and surrendered just four goals to go with two ground balls in just under 43 minutes of action. In her second meeting with the Stanford, Hertford went the distance for 68:43 in the cage and made eight saves with three crucial stops in extra time to keep the game going. She also picked up five ground balls for the fifth time this season. Hertford leads the Pac-12 with an 8.86 goals-against average and is fourth with a .488 save percentage.
The Pac-12 is in its second season of women's lacrosse. Trojans have now earned conference weekly honors 10 times. All-league goalie Gussie Johns was chosen twice for defensive player of the week in 2018; and All-American defender Lydia Sutton was named Defensive Player of the Week once. Senior attacker Emily Concialdi was chosen for the offensive award on Feb. 25 this season. Junior midfielder Kerrigan Miller was chosen for the offensive award in 2018 and the defensive honor in 2019.
No. 14 USC (12-1, 7-0 Pac-12) returns home to McAlister Field where it is 5-0 this season and will host No. 23 Colorado (5-5, 4-1) on Friday (April 5) for a 3 p.m. game and Oregon (2-10, 0-5) on Sunday (April 7). Both games will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks. Oregon will host the 2019 Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Papé Field in Eugene, Ore., from April 25-28.
