April 12, 2019 | Men's Tennis, Features
Daniel Cukierman snags doubles and singles wins to help power up the Trojans to victory.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 11 USC men's tennis team looked right at home back in familiar territory at Marks Stadium. After eight consecutive matches on the road, the Trojans tore their way to a 4-0 sweep on home turf, beating visiting Washington today. The win improves USC to 14-7 overall and to 4-1 in Pac-12 play.
In a new-look doubles lineup the Smith brothers found their winning touch first. Riley and Tanner Smith tagteamed the No. 2 spot and whipped up a 6-3 win over Washington's Lam/Sommer. Next, on court three, USC's Daniel Cukierman and Jack Jaede created some space on UW's Lumsden/Torocsik before Jaede jumped on his service game and cleaned up a 6-3 win that plugged the opening point on the board for the Trojans. It also suspended action on court one with USC's Brandon Holt and Laurens Verboven back on serve against Davis/Foley.
In singles, USC got outside smoke from Jake Sands and Tanner Smith, who picked up wins on courts six and five, respectively. A the No. 6 spot, freshman Sands hammered out a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Sebastian Hawken to make it a 2-0 USC lead. Not long after, senior #58 Smith mirrored that score with a takedown of Ernesto Turegano on court five. With the Trojans up 3-0, USC sophomore #16 Daniel Cukierman buckled in. After a tight first set, Cukierman gave up no ground in the second and scooped up the clincher on a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Enzo Sommer on court one. That suspended Riley Smith's three-setter on court four as well as a comeback push by Laurens Verboven on court two and a near-victory for Mor Bulis at the No. 4 slot.
USC remains at home for the next two weeks, lined up next for a 1 p.m. matchup against No. 48 Oregon tomorrow (April 13) at Marks Stadium.
