Trojans Tied For Third After 36 Holes At Western Intercollegiate
April 16, 2019 | Men's Golf, Features
Freshmen Henry, Reiter lead the way in second round.
Sophomore Kaito Onishi fired a 3-under 67 while freshman Charlie Reiter and Cameron Henry were also under par today to highlight No. 6 USC's efforts in the second round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo G.C. in Santa Cruz, Calif., on Tuesday (April 16).
The Trojans, with six top 2 finishes this year including three victories, are tied for third at 5-over 705 (348-357) in the six-play, five-count format. Host San Jose State remained first at 1-under 699 while Stanford moved up to second a shot back. USC is tied with California.
Henry, making his collegiate debut this week as an individual entry, continued his steady hand and is now tied for second at 5-under 135 (66-69) after his second straight sub par round. Henry, three back of first, was even going out with a pair of birdies and used two more on the back to finish the day at 1-under.
"Pretty proud of this round, especially how I finished," Henry said. "It was playing tougher with the wind being up and the pins in some really tough spots. I was able to hang in there even though I wasn't hitting it as well as I did yesterday.
"I saved a lot of pars and was able to make a couple of birdie putts at the end, so pretty proud of this round for sure. I think I'll take more from this round than yesterday's round because I didn't have my best stuff today but I was able to hang in there, save a lot of pars and keep my momentum going. I think today's round will help going into tomorrow."
Onishi is sixth at 4-under 136 (69-67) thanks in part to his second eagle on the par 5 9th hole in as many days. He turned at 2-under and was 1-under coming back for his 12 round in the 60s this year.
Senior Justin Suh is eighth at 2-under 138 (64-74). He was even at the turn after a four-birdie, four-bogey front but finished the back at 4-over. Fellow senior Sam Kim is tied for 11th at par 140 (66-74).
"It wasn't our best day, but we are still in a position to win this golf tournament," USC Head Coach Chris Zambri said. "We had some bright spots, the brightest being Cameron Henry. He is really making a statement."
Reiter turned in his best round since November with his 2-under 68 and moved into a tie for 23rd at 3-over 143 (75-68). He had five birdies on the day.
Sophomore Issei Tanabe is tied for 55th at 8-over 148 (74-74), junior Ryan Slater is tied for 62nd at 10-over 150 (74-76) and junior Kyle Suppa is tied for 76th at 14-over 154 (75-79).
USC will tee off with Stanford, California and San Jose State on Wednesday in the final round starting at 9:42 a.m. Live Golf Channel coverage begins at 1 p.m. PT.
