No. 10 USC Men Outlast No. 24 Arizona 4-2 On Senior Day
April 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis, Features
Trojans get a three-set comeback clincher from Mor Bulis at the No. 5 spot.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 10 USC men's tennis team saw a solid doubles effort turn into a tight singles stretch as visiting No. 24 Arizona turned up the pressure down the stretch. In the end, it was a three-set comeback from freshman Mor Bulis that sealed a 4-2 USC victory today at Marks Stadium, where USC also honored its five graduating Trojans — Jake DeVine, Jack Jaede, Logan Smith, Tanner Smith and Laurens Verboven — in a Senior Day ceremony. Today's win improves USC to 16-7 overall and to 6-1 in Pac-12 play.
USC hit the gas early in drumming up two quick doubles points, sparked by a speedy 6-1 win by Brandon Holt and Laurens Verboven at the top spot over Arizona's #71 Karpovets/Ziverts. The other two courts were neck and neck, but it was Daniel Cukierman and Jack Jaede hit the finish line first with a 6-3 win on court three over Block/Maier, suspending action at the No. 2 spot with Riley Smith and Tanner Smith just a beat away from victory.
Arizona pulled even with a singles win on court six, where Jonas Maier topped USC's #118 Jake DeVine 6-4, 7-5 to make it 1-1. Senior Laurens Verboven — in front of a group of fellow Belgian fans — tugged the Trojans back into the lead with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 win over Igor Karpovets, getting USC up 2-1. Another straight-set decision came for the Trojans when top gun #10 Brandon Holt beat Arizona's Jonas Ziverts 7-6 (6), 6-3 to put a 3-1 lead on the board for the Trojans, leaving three-setters raging on the remaining courts.
At the No. 2 spot, USC's #16 Daniel Cukierman lost ground in his third set and wound up falling to Filip Malbasic 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 as Arizona got back within one at 3-2. The pressure then poured out onto courts four and five, where Riley Smith was in a hole and Mor Bulis was in a tight battle, respectively. At the No. 5 spot, Bulis fended off Arizona's Caslos Hassey and pulled off the clincher for the Trojans, tacking up a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 comeback win that sealed the 4-2 win while suspending action on court four.
Next up for the Trojans in their regular-season finale matchup against Arizona State, set for 3 p.m. tomorrow (April 20) at Marks Stadium.
