Jackie Gilbert Repeats as Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week
April 22, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse, Features
The Trojans’ senior captain set a new school record with 17 draw controls in a win over Arizona State
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse senior defender Jackie Gilbert (Pleasanton, Calif.) was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 15-21, the Conference announced on Monday, April 22. She receives her second Pac-12 weekly award this season and the second of her career; and is one of six different Trojans to earn the league's weekly honor this spring.
In USC's regular-season finale, Gilbert dominated the center circle for 17 draw controls to set a new school record; previously held by All-American Michaela Michael (15 vs. Fresno State in 2015). Gilbert also collected three ground balls and caused a turnover in the Trojans' 16-10 victory, which clinched the Pac-12's regular-season title and secured the top seed in the upcoming Pac-12 tournament. In the win, Gilbert crossed the 200-career draw control plateau (213) and ranks third in school history. Her 110 draw wins this season also rank third among all-time USC single-season marks.
The Pac-12 is in its second season of women's lacrosse. Trojans have now earned conference weekly honors 12 times (eight defensive and four offensive). In 2018, All-league goalie Gussie Johns was chosen twice and All-American defender Lydia Sutton was selected once for the defensive honor. USC players have been chosen on six different weeks this spring, including offensive-and-defensive sweeps on March 18 and April 1. Junior All-American midfielder Kerrigan Miller became the first player in conference history to receive both the offensive (March 19, 2018) and defensive (March 11, 2019) awards in her career.
The 17th-ranked Trojans (14-3, 9-1 Pac-12) earned a first-round bye in the Pac-12 tournament and will play in one semifinal game at 4:30 p.m. PT on Friday (April 26) on Papé Field in Eugene, Ore. USC will face the winner of a quarterfinal game between fourth-seeded California (6-11, 3-7) and fifth-seeded Arizona State (6-11, 2-8). Should the Women of Troy win their semifinal, they will play in the league championship game set for 1 p.m. on Sunday (April 28). Tickets are available now at https://pac12.me/19WLAXTickets.
