No. 8 USC Men Stand Their Ground To Beat Stanford 4-2 In Pac-12 Semifinal
April 26, 2019 | Men's Tennis, Features
USC reaches the title match for the seventh time, looking for a fourth Pac-12 crown in Ojai.
OJAI, CALIF. — The No. 8 USC men's tennis team scoots through to the Pac-12 Tournament title match for the seventh time since the event began in 2012, with the Trojans eyeing a fourth conference crown. To get to tomorrow's final, USC had to fend off No. 14 Stanford in today's semifinals at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. The Trojans whipped up the doubles point and then moved ahead 3-0 with singles wins from Brandon Holt and Jake Sands before the Cardinal answered back with two singles wins. On court two, however, USC had a determined Daniel Cukierman finish things off with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) win to lock up the 4-2 decision and take that ticket to the title match. Now 19-7 overall, USC will face an upset-minded No. 33 California in tomorrow's final at 3 p.m.
USC kicked out of the gates with a 6-4 win from #11 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith at the top spot, beating Stanford's top guns Kumar/Sah 6-4 for the early lift. USC was in position for wins on courts two and three simultaneously, but it was Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith who hit the finish line first with another 6-4 win over Rotsaert/Sridhar to pocket the doubles point and suspend action on court two.
#10 Holt stayed in winning form in singles as the junior cruised to a swift 6-1, 6-2 win over Stanford's #12 Axel Geller on court one, making it a 2-0 USC advantage. Freshman Jake Sands chugged his way to victory soon after, topping Timothy Sah with a smooth 6-3, 6-0 win, and USC was up 3-0. That's when the Cardinal fired back. On court six, #125 Sangeet Sridhar beat USC's More Bulis 6-4, 6-4 to put Stanford on the board. And while a three-setter raged on court four, Stanford slipped to within one as William Genesen beat USC's #27 Laurens Verboven on court three 6-4, 6-3. On court two, #20 Cukierman would answer the call. Although Stanford's #55 Alexandre Rotsaert forced the issue in bringing up a tiebreaker in the second set, Cukierman righted his course and pinned up a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win that clinched the victory for the Trojans over the Cardinal at 4-2.
