Women of Troy Sweep the Utes 4-0
April 06, 2019 | Women's Tennis, Features
After a win over Colorado on Friday, April 5, the No. 11 ranked USC women's tennis team locked down a Pac-12 sweep of the weekend with a 4-0 victory over No. 39 Utah on Saturday, April 6. This win improves USC's record to 16-3 and 6-1 in Pac-12 Conference play.
The Trojans started off doubles on a high note as No. 14 Kulikov/Valdes defeated Utah's Chisholm/Tattini 6-2 on court one. The Trojans on courts two and three both reached match point at the same time and began play of the final point at the same time. USC's Branstine/Ewing clinched the doubles point first with a 6-4 win over Utah's Dush/Hung on court three. Because court two's match point was in play, the rally was able to finish to allow USC's Weissmann/Willson to beat the Ute duo of Hekking/Heimuli 6-4. All three Trojan courts won their doubles matches, and USC entered singles with a 1-0 advantage.
USC rolled its momentum from doubles into singles as No. 87 ranked Angela Kulikov took down Utah's Emily Dush 6-2, 6-3 on court three. Trojan Constance Branstine rode the positive energy into a win of her own on court six as she defeated Ute Leah Heimuli 7-5, 6-1 to push the Trojans ahead on court six.
USC's No. 43 ranked Salma Ewing clinched the match for the Women of Troy with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Utah's Brianna Chisholm.
The Trojans have another full week of tennis ahead. First, they will challenge No. 9 ranked Pepperdine on Tuesday (April 9) at 2 p.m. in Marks Stadium. Then, USC will hit the road to take on No. 15 Washington in Seattle on Friday (April 12) and then No. 36 Washington State in Pullman, Wa. on Saturday (April 13).
