The Trojans’ senior captain led USC to the program’s first-ever shutout with a 16-0 performance over Oregon
SAN FRANCISCO – USC lacrosse senior defender Jackie Gilbert (Pleasanton, Calif.) was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 1-7, the Conference announced on Monday, April 8.
Gilbert receives the first Pac-12 weekly award of her career and is the sixth different Trojan to receive the league's weekly honor this season. Her selection is USC's 11th all-time Pac-12 weekly certificate.
Behind the leadership of Gilbert, the Trojan defense produced the first shutout in program and Pac-12 history with a 16-0 victory over Oregon on Sunday (April 8). In the game, she collected 10 draw controls for her seventh-career game with double-digit draw controls. She also had two ground balls and two caused turnovers. In a narrow 9-8 loss to Colorado, Gilbert had six draw controls and matched career marks with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Pac-12 is in its second season of women's lacrosse. Trojans have now earned conference weekly honors 11 times (seven defensive and four offensive). In 2018, All-league goalie Gussie Johns was chosen twice and All-American defender Lydia Sutton was selected once for the defensive honor. USC players have been chosen on five different weeks this spring, including offensive-and-defensive sweeps on March 18 and April 1. This spring, Junior All-American midfielder Kerrigan Miller became the first player in conference history to receive both the offensive (March 19, 2018) and defensive (March 11, 2019) awards in her career.
The 13th-ranked Trojans (13-2, 8-1 Pac-12) have two regular-season games remaining on the schedule. USC heads to the East Coast to face No. 20 Stony Brook (7-4) on Sunday, April 14, at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) in Stony Brook, N.Y. The game will be shown live on the AmericaEast.tv streaming platform.
The Women of Troy will close the regular season with a meeting against Arizona State at McAlister Field on Saturday, April 20, at 2 p.m. PT for Senior Day. The University of Oregon will host the 2019 Pac-12 Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Papé Field in Eugene, Ore., from April 25-28. Tickets are available now at https://pac12.me/19WLAXTickets.
