Justin Suh Ties For Fourth At NCAA Championships
May 27, 2019 | Men's Golf, Features
Trojan squad finishes 14th overall.
Senior Justin Suh closed his collegiate career with a par 72 to lock in an individual tie for fourth while leading USC to one of the top final rounds of the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, but it wasn't enough for the Trojans to climb the ladder into a top 8 finish, the squad finishing six back in 14th on Monday (May 27) at the Blessings G.C. in Fayetteville, Ark.
Â
The Trojans closed the 2018-19 season at a combined 50-over 1202 (304-304-292-302) in the program's 12th NCAA Championship final appearance under 13th-year head coach Chris Zambri.
Â
USC's final-round 14-over 302 was tied for the fifth best of the day during an afternoon where the wind blew as hard as it had all tournament.
Â
Suh tied for fourth at 2-under 286 (71-75-68-72) for USC's best finish since Rico Hoey took second three seasons ago. It was his second top 10 at nationals after a tie for 10th as a freshman and his third top 19.
Â
It was the senior from San Jose's seventh top 4 finish of the season, ninth in the top 10 and 12 in the top 15 in as many starts. A day ago, his 68 gave him 21 rounds under 70 on the season, tying his school record set last year. He also finished this season with 29 rounds of par or better in 38 outings.
Â
"The last couple of years have been a real privilege to be able to watch Justin Suh play golf," Zambri said. "He is an elite golfer. I cannot wait to watch him on television for years to come."
Â
Suh birdied his opening hole on 10 en route to a 2-over first nine and dropped to 2-over with a bogey on 3. But he birdied 4 and eagled the par 5 fifth hole to get to even, where he finished.
"It was kind of nice having Coach with me for the last six holes," Suh said. "It was nice to just end it with him because he has taught me so much for these last four years. It was a very cool feeling walking down nine, and ending up with a par so that was nice. The memories I've made at SC, the connections I've made, it's pretty overwhelming to know that it is coming to an end."
Â
Sophomore Kaito Onishi tied for 47th at 14-over 302 (79-73-74-76) while freshman Charlie Reiter tied for 61st at 17-over 305 (75-77-77-76). Onishi birdied three times Monday while Reiter, after a quad on 11 for his second hole of the day, managed to finish the rest of his round at par, including an eagle on 2.
Â
Sophomore Issei Tanabe tied for 75th at 24-over 312 (82-79-73-78). Senior Sam Kim, who was subbed out for Kyle Suppa in round three, returned for the final round and posted a 79 with three birdies.
Â
USC's season finishes with three wins among six top 2 finishes. The Trojans lose Suh and fellow senior Sam Kim but welcome an exciting crop of newcomers.
Â
"We definitely could have finished the season better," Zambri said. "There are things that I need to do better to help the guys become better players. I am looking forward to next season as we have three strong recruits coming in that will make us a stronger team."
