Riley Smith delivers an entertaining clincher to beat the Toreros 4-0 at Marks Stadium.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 8 USC men's tennis team drummed up its 13th straight ticket to the NCAA Round of 16 after dispatching visiting San Diego 4-0 today in the Second Round. Once again, USC hauled in the doubles point with precision. In singles, freshman Jake Sands sprinted to a straight-set victory, and then senior Laurens Verboven came through to make it 3-0. With three three-setters raging, junior Riley Smith battled through an intense second-set tiebreaker, finally getting match point and pouncing on it to secure victory for his Trojan teammates. USC is now 22-7 overall and sets up to host a May 11 Round of 16 matchup next week at Marks Stadium against North Carolina.
Once again, USC made short work of double action. On court three, it was business as usual for Daniel Cukierman and Tanner Smith, who ripped through to their eighth straight doubles win on a 6-2 decision over San Diego's Dufort/Norfeldt. Soon after, the first point of the day was secured from court one, where #10 Riley Smith and Riley Smith topped the Toreros' #50 Gamerov/Holmgren 6-3. That plugged a 1-0 lead on the board for the Trojans and suspended action on court two.
Coming in hot in singles play was freshman Jake Sands, who took no prisoners in shoving his way to a 6-2, 6-1 win over David Norfeldt on court five to make it a 2-0 Trojan advantage. On courts one and two, Trojans Brandon Holt and Daniel Cukierman fought back from first-set holes and pushed their respective matches into third sets. On court six, Mor Bulis was also in a three-set battle. While those raged on, junior Riley Smith forced his second set into a tiebreaker with USD's Joel Gamerov. Gamerov would not go away, and threatened to take the second set four times before Smith finally worked ahead 10-9 and then captured the clincher with a final 6-2, 7-6 (9) win to get USC on through to the Round of 16 for the 13th consecutive year.
