Trojans Take Down Seminoles to Advance at NCAA Beach Championship

The Women of Troy secured the season’s 30th win on a 3-1 decision over third-seeded Florida State
GULF SHORES, Ala. – The top-seeded USC beach volleyball team (30-5) recorded a 3-1 win over third-seeded Florida State (29-7) to eliminate the Seminoles and advance at the 2019 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship on Saturday, May 4. The win pits the Women of Troy against seventh-seeded Hawai'i (28-10) for a noon CT (10 a.m. PT) dual later today.
The Trojans reached the 30-win plateau for the third time in program history (34 in 2016, 38 in 2017) and improved to 11-4 all-time against the Seminoles. USC also improved to 19-7 all-time in Gulf Shores.
USC won first sets on four courts and got the first point of the dual when senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina put together a 21-15, 21-15 win over Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick at the No. 1 position. It was the 14th straight win for the top Trojan pair as they improve to 32-2 this season with a 63-4 all-time mark.
Florida State evened the dual momentarily when Macy Jerger and Kate Privett defeated USC's pair of junior Cammie Dorn and freshman Mollie Ebertin, 21-16, 21-12, at the No. 5 position. The Trojans fired back to go ahead, 2-1, on the strength of a 21-14, 21-19 win by senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater at the No. 2 position. The duo beat Sara Putt and Payton Rund.
The victory went into the books when sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto finished off a 24-22, 21-17 win over Brooke Kuhlman and Avery Poppinga at the No. 3 spot for their 30th win this season. They improved to 30-3 on the year and to 40-8 all-time in two seasons as a pair.
With the dual decided, play was suspended at court four. There, junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser split sets with Payton Caffrey and Molly McBain. The Trojan tandem won the first, 21-19, but the Seminoles took the second by the same score.
USC now faces the Wahine in its third straight elimination dual. The Trojans are 13-3 all-time against UH and earned a 4-1 win over Hawai'i in Tempe, Ariz., on March 23. The dual will be shown live on ESPN2 with individual court coverage on the WatchESPN app and on ESPN3. A victory over the Wahine will set USC up for a showdown with either second-seeded UCLA or fourth-seeded LSU.
