Medals For All Trojans At Pan American Games
August 12, 2019 | Men's Water Polo, Women's Water Polo, Features
With Trojans on their rosters, USA men and women win gold, Canadian women take silver and Brazil women earn bronze.
The 2019 Pan American Games saw seven Trojans represent their countries in water polo, and all seven emerged with medals in Lima, Peru. What's more, two new nations punched their tickets to the 2020 Olympic Games.Â
The United States men — with Trojans Hannes Daube and Marko Vavic in action — won gold at the event to secure Olympic qualification. And with a silver medal, the Canadian women — with USC grads Joelle Bekhazi and Hayley McKelvey — also earned their place in Tokyo. The U.S. women's team — with Paige Hauschild and Stephania Haralabidis on the roster — won a fifth consecutive Pan Am gold medal and already had its Olympic qualification in hand as FINA Super Final champions. A 2016 Olympian and two-time NCAA champion, Victória Chamorro was back in the cage for Brazil and helped her country take bronze.
Every Trojan who hit the water for their countries also have won at least one NCAA Championship at USC, including 2018 champions and current Trojans Hauschild, Daube and Vavic. Brazilian Chamorro and Canadian McKelvey were both on that 2018 USC women's team with Hauschild. Team USA's Haralabidis also was alongside Chamorro for the Women of Troy's 2016 NCAA title. The veteran of the group, Bekhazi, won an NCAA title in 2010 with the Women of Troy.
The silver medal finish in Lima was a historic moment for Team Canada and Trojans Bekhazi and McKelvey, as it secured Canada's place at the Olympic Games for the first time since 2004.
The USA women's run to gold was highlighting by overpowering play across the board. The United States outscored its opponents 142-24 in Lima. Haralabidis plugged in 22 of those goals to stand as the highest-scoring Trojan at the event, while Bekhazi scored 14 goals for Canada and Daube had 14 for the USA men. Chamorro, meanwhile, collected 47 saves for bronze-medalist Brazil. Vavic finished up with 10 goals for Team USA, and McKelvey added six for Canada. Hauschild, who had been sidelined by injury, was activated for the gold-medal game and scored one for the USA women.
