No. 1 USC Takes Down Two On Opening Day At Inland Empire Classic

Trojans top Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 21-9 and Whitter 15-9 for a 2-0 start to 2019.
CLAREMONT, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team kicked down the starting gates of the 2019 season with two solid wins to open action at the Inland Empire Classic today in Claremont, Calif. The Trojans' season opener saw a 21-9 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, followed directly by a 15-9 win over Whittier. Tomorrow, USC has a morning tilt against No. 4 UC Santa Barbara at 10:20 a.m. before a clash with Concordia at 1 p.m. in La Verne.
Along the way to USC's 2-0 start to 2019, four Trojans tallied their first goals in Cardinal and Gold. Freshman Chris Sturtevant served up a hat trick in USC's win over Whittier, leading the charge for the Trojan newcomers. Close behind were Marcus Longton and Matt Harrison, who delivered two goals apiece in the win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, while Grayden Reynolds punched up his first career goal as a Trojan as well in that win over the Stags.
USC utilized three goalies in today's action, with Jere Ashby checking into the cage for his first official minutes as a Trojan. Ashby collected three saves and gave up just one goal in his eight minutes of action to help USC wrap up that 21-9 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
