Trojans seventh after 18 holes.
Junior Alyaa Abdulghany fired a 2-under 70 to lead the No. 1 USC women's golf team in its season-opening round at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate on Monday (Sept. 16) at the Royal Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.
USC, coming off of a seven-win season, will need to come-from-behind to obtain its first this victory this year after opening with a 3-over 291, tied for seventh in the packed 12-team field.
Wake Forest took the first-round lead at 6-under 282 while Arkansas was one back. Arizona (-3) and South Carolina (-2) were the other teams under par. Defending NCAA champion Duke was a stroke back of Troy.
Abdulghany is tied for sixth after 18 holes thanks to a strong opening act that saw an eagle on the par 4 5th hole -- where she nailed a wedge from 113 yards to within a three freet and watched it spin back in -- as well as birdies on 9 and 18.
Junior Jennifer Chang is tied for 25th at 1-over 73 after her one-birdie, two-bogey first round. Junior Gabriela Ruffels and senior Aiko Leong are tied for 33rd at 2-over 74 while senior Allisen Corpuz is tied for 36th at 3-over 75.
Ruffels closed her round with an eagle on the par 5 18th hole to secure her 2-under back 9 while Corpuz joined Abdulghany with a birdie on 18.
USC, a two-time winner of the five-year-old tournament, will tee off in the second round Tuesday beginning at 8:35 a.m. CT with UCLA and Duke.
