USC Women's Tennis Opens 2020 Season With Victory Over Kentucky

SEATTLE--The USC women's tennis team opened up the 2020 season with a 4-3 victory over Kentucky today (Jan. 25) during ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Washington. The Women of Troy are now 1-0 on the season after defeating the Wildcats at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. USC will take on the winner of Washington versus Princeton match tomorrow (Jan. 26) at 2 p.m. PT.
In doubles action, Trojans Con. Branstine/Ewing defeated Kentucky's D. Tkachenko/GIrbau 6-2 on court two. On court three, USC's Jaeger/Willson beat Wildcat pair A. Tkachenko/Molina 6-3 to successfully claim the doubles point. USC led the match 1-0.
Singles brought a thrilling match between the Trojans and the Wildcats. Kentucky's No. 59 ranked Lesedi Jacobs put her mark on the scoreboard by defeating USC's Salma Ewing 6-2, 6-1 on court two. Her teammate Carolta Molina followed suit as she beat Trojan Sydney Van Alphen 6-3, 6-2 on court three to push the Wildcats ahead 2-1 overall.
Senior captain and No. 60 ranked Angela Kulikov notched her first singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Akvile Parazinskaite on court one. This tied up the match at 2-2 overall.
On court six, the Wildcats responded with a comeback win as Anastasia Tkachenko beat USC's Constance Branstine 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 to push Kentucky ahead 3-2.
Kentucky only needed one more point to clinch, it was imperative the Trojans win the remaining two matches. USC freshman Eryn Cayetano collected a clutch 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Diana Tkachenko to keep the Women of Troy in the match.
After losing the first set 4-6, Trojan sophomore Danielle Willson fight back to beat Carla Girbau 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the following two sets to clinch the match for USC.
