No. 11 USC Falls to Princeton 4-3 on Final Day of ITA Kickoff

SEATTLE--The No. 11 USC women's team suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Princeton 4-3 today (Jan. 26) on the second day of ITA Kickoff Weekend hosted by Washington. The Women of Troy are now 1-1 on the season after today's match which was played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. The Tigers will now automatically advance to the National Team Indoor Championships.
The Trojans kicked off doubles on a positive note as Cayetano/Kulikov defeated Princeton's No. 19 ranked Joyce/Frayman 6-3 on court one. The Tigers responded as Rodilosso/Shvets beat Jaeger/Willson 6-2 on court three. USC's Branstine/Ewing finished off doubles with a win as they beat the Tiger pair of McKee/Howard 6-3 to successfully clinch the doubles point. USC led the match 1-0.
Senior No. 60 Angela Kulikov used her win from doubles as momentum to take into singles. She decisively beat No. 24 Brianna Shvets 6-3, 6-2 on court one to notch another point for the Trojans. On court five, USC freshman Eryn Cayetano defeated Tiger Stephanie Schrage 6-3, 6-1 to push the Trojans ahead 3-0.
Although the Women of Troy held a strong lead, the Tigers did not quit. Princeton's No. 66 Daria Frayman beat Trojan sophomore Salma Ewing 6-1, 6-3 on court two. Shortly thereafter, Tiger No. 55 Zoe Howard defeated USC senior Sydney Van Alphen6-2, 6-2 on court three. Princeton only trailed by one point at 3-2.
USC senior Constance Branstine fell to Princeton's Clare McKee 6-4, 6-4 on court six. With the match now tied at 3-3, everything came down to the outcome on court four. USC sophomore Danielle Willson battled but ultimately fell to Tiger Grace Joyce 6-3, 7-5 who clinched the match for the Tigers.
USC's next action will bring them back to Los Angeles for their home opener in Marks Stadium. The Women of Troy will take on Saint Mary's on Friday (Jan. 31) at 3 p.m. PT and then gear up for a double header on Saturday (Feb. 1) as they challenge UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. PT and Long Beach State at 3 p.m. PT.
