No. 1 USC Whips Up 6-1 Win At Wisconsin
February 11, 2020 | Men's Tennis, Features
Daniel Cukierman comes up with another clincher for the Trojans at the top spot.
MADISON, WISC. — The No. 1 USC men's tennis team whipped up a 6-1 win over host Wisconsin as the Trojans got a good feel for the courts at the site of the coming ITA National Team Indoor Championships. In today's bout with the Badgers, USC pulled off a close doubles point before rattling off a string of singles wins to lock up the road win and improve to 5-1 overall.
The Trojans pulled out the doubles point when #53 Stefan Dostanic and Riley Smith captured a 6-3 win on court two to log a 1-0 lead for the Trojans. On court one, Trojans Mor Bulis and Daniel Cukierman set the pace with a 6-1 win, but the Badgers fired back with a 6-3 win over Bradley Frye and Ryder Jackson on court three to tighten things up and set the stage for Dostanic/Smith's victory.
That propelled the Trojans on through to singles play with some momentum. Smith stayed hot-handed, drumming up a 6-2, 6-0 win on court two to tug the Trojans to a 2-0 advantage. Frye avenged his doubles dip by giving USC a 3-0 lead on his swift 6-1, 6-3 win on court six to set up a teammate for the clincher. That would be top-ranked Cukierman once again. The junior registered his third clinching win of the season from court one on a 6-2, 6-3 decision. USC was up 4-0, but action continued on the remaining courts. Dostanic hit the finish line next, posting a 6-4, 6-4 win from the No. 3 spot to make it 5-0, while tighter matches raged on on courts four and five. On court four, Jackson averted a third set in pulling out a solid tiebreaker in the second, winning 6-3, 7-6 (1) to get USC ahead 6-0, while Jake Sands' match on court five stretched to a 10-game tiebreaker to decide the final match. That would go the way of Wisconsin, as Sands wound up with a 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) loss to end the action for the day.
The Trojans stay in town for the rest of the week, setting up for competition at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The No. 2 seed in the draw, USC will open up against TCU at 12 p.m. CT on Friday (Feb. 14) to fight for a spot in the next day's quarterfinals against either Stanford or NC State. The semifinals will take place on Feb. 16, with the title match on Feb. 17.
