No. 8 UCLA Men's Volleyball Defeats USC In 4 Sets

Cole Ketrzynski had 15 kills and 9 digs and teammate Daenan Gyimah had 14 kills while hitting .600 and added 6 blocks to lead the host No. 8 UCLA men's volleyball team to a 23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19 victory over USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Sunday (Feb. 16) in Westwood.
UCLA improved to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the MPSF. USC fell to 2-11 overall, its slowest start since a similar mark in 2016, and the Trojans remained winless in MPSF play at 0-4.
Sam Lewis had 8 kills (hitting .455) and Brandon Browning had 8 kills and 9 digs to lead USC. Simon Gallas added 6 kills and Cole Paxson had 6 digs.
Cole Pender added 8 kills (hitting .462) for the Bruins, while Mads Kyed Jensen had 5 kills, 6 digs, 5 blocks and 4 aces and Cole Power had 7 digs.
UCLA hit .391 in the match to USC's .212. The Bruins also had more blocks (10.5 to 1.0), digs (34 to 25) and aces (7 to 4).
UCLA used a 4-point run early in the first set to build a 5-3 lead and extended it to 18-14, but USC tied it at 18-18 and soon after went on a 4-point run to move ahead 23-21, an edge it didn't surrender while serving 4 aces in the set. UCLA scored 5 out of 6 points to go up 17-12 in the second set but USC closed to 18-17 before the Bruins restored order by scoring 5 of the following 6 points. UCLA notched the first 2 points of the third set and steadily pulled out to 14-5 and then 18-7 margins before cruising in the rest of the set. UCLA got out to a 6-2 lead to start the fourth set before USC tied it at 8-8 and then took a 13-12 lead, but the Bruins got 8 of the next 10 points to build a 20-15 lead to stave off the Trojans.
USC, which fell 3-0 at Pepperdine on Friday (Feb. 14), remains on the road this coming week for another pair of MPSF matches, first at No. 11 Stanford on Thursday (Feb. 20) and then at No. 2 BYU on Saturday (Feb. 22).
