USC Women Take 93-67 Loss To No. 3 Oregon
February 16, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Endyia Rogers scores 21 and Kayla Overbeck hits a season-high 17 for the Trojans.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team came up against a hot-handed No. 3 Oregon squad and wound up with a 93-67 loss to the Ducks today at Galen Center. USC had scored the first seven points of the game, but Oregon countered and ended up with 13 3-pointers in the game to overcome its host. USC goes to 13-12 overall and to 5-9 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while Oregon improves to 24-2, 13-1.
After falling in a 7-0 hole early, Oregon heated up and took the lead on 53.1-percent shooting from the floor in the first half. USC was effective, too, but just behind at 46.7 percent. USC's Endyia Rogers had shouldered the load of scoring for the Trojans in those first 20 minutes with 15 first-half points as the Trojans trailed the Ducks 43-32 art halftime. Oregon would hit at a consistent 60-percent clip throughout the second half — that included nine second-half 3-pointers to keep the Trojans out of reach. USC finished up a 44.3 percent from the floor and landed six threes, while Oregon won out on the boards 38-23.
USC was led by Endyia Rogers' 21 points and eight rebounds with Kayla Overbeck adding a season-high 17 points and Alissa Pili hitting double digits for the 10th straight game in supplying 14 points today. She also had a career-high four assists. Oregon finished up with Erin Boley leading with 25 points, including seven 3-pointers made. Ruthy Hebard had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Satou Sabally had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Sabrina Ionesco had 12 points and 13 assists, and USC grad Minyon Moore had 11 assists for the Ducks in the winning effort.
USC opened up a 7-0 lead on the Ducks, with Kayla Overbeck serving up the first points of the day off a feed from Alissa Pili. The Ducks fought back, and the lead would trade hands for a stretch, while USC snarled things up at 12-12 on a three from Endyia Rogers and later again at 15-15 with a long bomb from Desiree Caldwell. An Oregon buzzer-beating three would lift the visitors ahead 20-15 at the end of the first, and then the Ducks found a hot spot in the second. Oregon manufactured a 10-0 run to get out ahead 38-24 until Pili put a stop to that. Rogers followed with a runner, and it was a 38-28 Oregon advantage with 2:30 left in the half. Both Rogers and Pili would strike again before the close of the half, and USC was down 43-32 to the Ducks at the break.
Oregon tallied the first eight points of the third before Overbeck broke up the party from the paint. Oregon would wrap 3-pointers around a three from Alyson Miura, and USC was down 57-37 with 4:25 on the clock. USC clawed back with a 9-0 run that saw Overbeck get into double digits and Miura land another three. That had the score at 57-46 with 2:25 on the clock. Oregon would land three 3-pointers in the next two minutes, and the Ducks would go up 68-50 entering the fourth. When threes didn't fall for Oregon, three-point plays would come through as the Ducks expanded their control of things to a final 93-67 decision.
