USC Women Wind Up Short At Washington
February 21, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans take a 75-66 loss at the hands of the Huskies in Seattle.
SEATTLE, WASH. — The USC women's basketball team came up against a stubborn Washington squad tonight in Seattle, seeing the Huskies shrug off each and every attempt by the Trojans to reel their hosts back in. USC had snagged an overtime victory when the teams met last in Los Angeles, but Washington made sure to sidestep that fate in netting the buckets it needed late to beat USC 75-66. USC goes to 13-13 overall and to 5-10 in Pac-12 play with the road loss, while Washington improves to 12-14, 4-11.
USC had the early lead, but the Huskies were hot and shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the first half while also manhandling the boards to the tune of a 20-9 advantage as Washington led USC 40-30 by halftime. USC was shooting 46.2 percent, but the Huskies seemed to have an answer for the Trojans at every turn in those first 20 minutes. In the second half, Washington stayed the course, watching the Trojans snip the lead down to three but finding late 3-pointers to motor out of reach. The Huskies finished up shooting 49.2 percent from the floor to edge out USC's upped effort to close at 48.2. Washington continued to win out on the boards, finishing up with a 39-21 rebounding advantage.
USC received a team-high 19 points from Alissa Pili — her 11th straight game in double digits — along with a 14-point outing from Desiree Caldwell, who also had five assists. Kayla Overbeck was next in line with nine points and a team-high six rebounds. The Huskies got a game-high 25 points from Amber Melgoza, whose buried two fourth-quarter 3-pointers for a power boost for the hosts. Haley Van Dyke added 13 points, and Quay Miller and Ali Bamberger added 10 points apiece.
USC had crafted an early lead, but the Huskies fired off an 13-0 rally to work ahead, and Washington would get out to as large as a 12-point lead. Alissa Pili had snapped Washington's surge with her sixth points of the night, but Washington hit back-to-back buckets to go up 24-12. Endyia Rogers hit next for the Trojans, and Kayla Overbeck wrapped the frame by converting a three-point play for the Trojan cause to make it 24-17 Huskies at the end of the first. USC would land 3-pointers from Alyson Miura, Pili and Desiree Caldwell in the second, but the Huskies hot hands kept clicking as the hosts would lead it 40-30 by halftime.
USC found a groove in the third, with Pili sparking a 7-0 rally that included another three from Miura and a runner from Rogers. Caldwell connected later, and Overbeck landed two more free throws, and the Trojans were within three, down 44-41 with 6:04 on the clock. The Huskies bit back and moved ahead by seven, but Pili was far from done. She struck back-to-back to bring it back to a three-point margin with 1:55 left in the third. Washington wound up with two baskets in the next stretch, though, and USC was in a 54-47 hole entering the fourth. USC clawed back within three again as Caldwell joined Pili in double digits, getting it to 61-58 with 4:07 to go. The Huskies would hit three back-breaking 3-pointers in the next two minutes, though, and all of a sudden USC was down by 10 again, trailing 70-60 with 1:55 remaining. Caldwell and Rogers would find threes for the Trojans in the final minute, but the Huskies held their ground from the line and locked up a 75-66 win over the visiting Trojans.
