February 23, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Freshman forward hauls in her 10th double-double in the Trojans’ road win.
PULLMAN, WASH. — The USC women's basketball team was powered by Alissa Pili in Pullman as the Trojans punched up a Pac-12 road win with a 66-60 victory over host Washington State. Pili's 10th double-double of the season featured a career-high 32 points by the freshman, as well as 12 rebounds as USC improved to 14-13 overall and to 6-10 in Pac-12 play. WSU goes to 11-17, 4-12.
Pili accounted for over half USC's points in the first half, delivering 20 by the break as the Trojans led it 37-19 on 50-percent shooting from the floor. The Cougars were shooting 29.6 percent in the first half, while this Trojans owned the boards 23-13 through those first 20 minutes. The Trojans led by as much as 20 points in the third, although WSU would carve it down to a five-point game in the final minute thanks to four fourth-quarter 3-pointers before USC locked in and held its ground for the win. USC wrapped the game shooting 44.2 percent from the floor to WSU's 39.1 percent. The Trojans also won out on the boards 40-31 thanks to Pili's 12 rebounds, nine from Kayla Overbeck and eight from Angel Jackson. Overbeck also nabbed a career-high five steals. Pili was the only Trojan in double digits with her 32 points, with Kyra White and Overbeck both adding eight apiece. WSU was led by Chanel Molina's 23 points, with Bella Murekatete adding 14 and Borislava Hristova scoring 11 for the Cougars.
The lead traded hands five times early, but USC would construct a solid lead in building out a couple 6-0 surges — the last capped by a buzzer-beater from Desiree Caldwell to take the Trojans to a 21-9 lead at the close off the first. In the second, Alissa Pili kept powering her way to points. She scored six of USC's first eight points in the second quarter, and didn't stop there. After Alyson Miura dropped a 3-pointer for the Trojan cause, Pili popped one herself, netting 20 points for the freshman forward and making it a 37-19 USC lead at halftime.
WSU came out in the second half with six straight points and scored the last eight of the frame thanks to a buzzer-beating three to carve down USC's lead to 53-42 entering the fourth. WSU hit a three and added another bucket to get to within six at 53-47 at 7:25, but Pili interrupted things with a jumper at 7:10. A minute later, she hauled in her own rebound and put it right back to record her 10th double-double and make it 57-47 USC. She'd be the only Trojan to make a bucket from the floor in the fourth, but the Trojans were able to hold off the Cougars in their late push. USC went 7-of-8 from the line while Pili worked her way to a career-high 32 points on the day. Rogers' successful trip to the stripe closed things out on a 66-60 USC road win.
