USC Women Exact Revenge With 69-66 Win Over Utah
February 28, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
The Trojans defend home turf and notch a key Pac-12 win over the Utes behind 29 points from Alissa Pili.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team scored a key Pac-12 win in getting out ahead of visiting Utah and holding its ground for a 69-66 victory at Galen Center. Freshmen Alissa Pili and Endyia Rogers were USC's one-two punch tonight, combining for 47 points in the win, which improved the Trojans to 15-13 overall and to 7-10 in Pac-12 play for a likely No. 7 seed in the coming Pac-12 Tournament. Utah goes to 13-15, 6-11 as USC avenged a loss to the Utes taken in Salt Lake City a month ago.
USC forced 11 first-half turnovers out of the Utes and manufactured a 10-0 run in the first quarter to move out ahead. USC was shooting 33.3 percent from the floor to trail Utah's 37.5 percent, by the Trojans got a charge from those Ute turnovers to lead things 30-23 by halftime. Ten more Utah turnovers came in the second half, with USC nabbing clutch late takeaways from Alyson Miura and Kayla Overbeck to key the push to victory. By the final buzzer, USC had the win on 40 percent shooting from the floor and a 19-of-25 effort from the free-throw line. Utah wrapped at 45.3 percent overall and went 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. Utah also won out on the boards 36-26, but it was the Utes 21 turnovers that fueled 20 points for the Trojans as USC emerged victorious.
Again, USC was led in scoring by freshman Alissa Pili, whose 13th straight double-digit game saw the forward produce 29 points and seven rebounds. Fellow freshman Endyia Rogers added 18 points, while sophomore Desiree Caldwell served up five assists. Utah had three players finish in double digits. Brynna Maxwell led the way with 18 point, with Daneesha Provo adding 11 and Maurane Corbin scoring 10.
A drive and finish from Alissa Pili sparked a 10-0 USC rally in the first and saw a pair of 3-pointers from Endyia Rogers craft a 15-5 USC lead with 3:05 on the clock. By the end of the first, USC gripped a 17-9, but Utah carved that down to a four-point game with the first four points of the next stretch. USC would get back out ahead by 10 after a Rogers steal and finish and then another bucket from Pili made its 30-20 with 1:15 left in the half. Utah would get to the line in the remaining run, and USC would take a 30-23 lead into the locker room at that break.
Utah would carve two within two, but the Trojans responded. Pili produced her 18th points next, Kayla Overbeck connected down low, and Rogers sliced her way to the hoop to get to 18 as well while bumping USC ahead 44-35 with 3:40 on the clock. After Pili went to the line and got herself to 20 points with a 10-point Trojan advantage, Utah managed the last four point of the frame to make it 51-44 USC entering the fourth. A Utah 3-pointer got the Utes within three at 58-55 with 3:40 to go, but Alyson Miura answered with a jumper, and then Pili got back to the line for a pair, and USC was up 62-55 with 2:44 remaining. Miura stepped up with a key steal a minute later, squashing a Utah possession that instead turned into two points for the Trojans as Pili hit Overbeck for a 64-57 lead at 1:20. The Trojans would hold on from the free-throw line down the stretch, with two more from Pili making its 69-63 Trojas with 14 ticks to go. Utah landed a three at the buzzer, but the win was already solidly in USC's column.
