USC Women Score 66-55 Win Over Colorado On Senior Day
March 01, 2020 | Women's Basketball, Features
Senior Kayla Overbeck hit double digits for the Trojans in the final regular-season game of the year.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team wrapped the regular season on a winning note, scoring a 66-55 win over visiting Colorado on Senior Day at Galen Center. The Trojans stormed ahead as the Buffs offense fizzled in the second quarter, and USC would stay the course to victory. The win secures the No. 7 seed for the Trojans in the coming Pac-12 Tournament as USC improved to 16-13 overall with an 8-10 finish in Pac-12 play. Colorado is now 16-13, 5-13.
Tied up after 10 minutes of action, USC shoved its way into a double-digit lead by halftime. Colorado landed just one bucket from the floor in the second quarter while USC's freshmen stole the show. By halftime, four Trojan freshmen had combined for 27 of USC's 29 points. In crafting that 29-17 halftime lead, USC had shot 42.3 percent from the floor to Colorado's 20 percent effort. The Buffs would pick up the pace in the second half and stay in stride with the Trojans, but USC's first-half performance and steadiness in the second ensured the Trojans would emerge with the win. USC finished up at 45.1 percent from the floor to 30.5 by the Buffs. Colorado won out on the boards 40-30.
USC received 20-point games from freshmen Alissa Pili and Endyia Rogers, with Pili also pulling in 13 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Senior Kayla Overbeck joined her freshmen teammates in double figures, scoring 10 on Senior Day to help keep the Trojans out ahead of the Buffs. Colorado got 20 points form Aubrey Knight and 10 each from Peanut Title and Jaylen Sherrod.
After Colorado jumped ahead early, USC punched up a 7-0 rally into the lead. Alissa Pili sparked it with a 3-pointer to get USC on the board, then provided a bucket down low before fellow freshman Angel Jackson followed, and USC was on top 7-4. A late push by the Buffs snarled things up 11-11 by the close of the first, but Rogers opened the next frame with a three to take the Trojans back ahead. That lit the fuse on another Trojan surge — albeit one peppered by interruptions from the referee's whistle — as USC edged ahead 18-11 with 5:30 on the clock. The Buffs would land just one basket from the floor in the entire second quarter, while the Trojans kept striking. Alyson Miura dropped a three to close the half and tug the Trojans ahead 29-17 at halftime.
The Buffs and Trojans stayed in stride in the third quarter, with 20 points apiece while Pili powered her way into a double-double and Rogers got into double figures. In the fourth, senior Kayla Overbeck got to double digits as well, hitting from the paint to take the Trojans to a 58-44 lead with 5:40 to go. Four minutes later, Rogers scored a flashy bucket to make it 63-50 Trojans, and USC was on its way to the win. Pili hit one last free throw to match her fellow freshman Rogers with 20 points on the day, and USC had a 66-55 win in the books.
