February 17, 2020 | Women's Golf, Features
Gabriela Ruffels' pair of 68s propels her to second-round lead.
Junior Gabriela Ruffels fired a pair of 68s while junior Alyaa Abdulghany posted a career-best-tying 67 to lead No. 3 USC to a commanding lead after a 36-hole first day of the Rebel Beach Intercollegiate at the Spanish Trail C.C. on Monday (Feb. 17).
USC, looking for its first win this season, leads the 11-team field at 18-under 558 (284-274), 14 strokes better than second-place Fresno State. Troy's second round was its best this season. The Trojans put all five starters inside the top 10.
Ruffels, who posted a 67 in her final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge last week, extended her hot streak in Las Vegas with two more sub-70 rounds. She had five birdies in the first round and six in her second, including three in a row at one point.
Abdulghany scratched out her third round in the 60s this season - and seventh of her career - with her 5-under second round that saw five birdies without a bogey. Her 67 matched her career-best posted as a sophomore in the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate.
Junior Allisen Corpuz is third at 4-under 140 (71-69) after also registering her third round in the 60s this season in the second lap, which included four birdies. She now has a team-best 12 rounds under par this year and has nine career rounds in the 60s.
Junior Amelia Garvey is tied for sixth at 1-under 143 (73-70) while sophomore Malia Nam is tied for ninth at par 144 (74-70).
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
