Trojans place four in the top 5 in 22-stroke victory.
Four Trojans claimed the top five spots at the Rebel Beach Intercollegiate - led by winner Gabriela Ruffels and second-place finisher Allisen Corpuz – as the No. 3 USC women's golf team locked down its first win of the season with a 22-stroke margin of victory Tuesday (Feb. 18) at the Spanish Trail C.C.
USC won the tournament at 25-under 839 (284-274-281) – the fourth-most under par in a 54-hole event in school history – while Fresno State (-3) was the only other school to break par in the 11-team field.
The Trojans' 22-stroke victory is its most since USC won the 2015 ANNIKA Intercollegiate by 23 strokes after finishing at a school-record 36-under. Troy's second round yesterday (part of Monday's 36-hole first day) was its best this season and tied for the sixth-best in school history.
"It was a great team effort and a strong follow-up to our second-place finish last week at Northrop," USC Head Coach Justin Silverstein said. "Thrilled to see Gabriela get her first win this season and Allisen Corpuz battled her to the final hole. Having Alyaa Abdulghany and Amelia Garvey also finish in the top 5 was a testament to the excellent all-around work the team put in."
Ruffels snared her second career win and first since last season at a tournament record 9-under 207 (68-68-71), giving her four straight rounds under par and five in a row of par or better.
Since a 48th to start the season, Ruffels has improved in each of her following four tournaments, including a tie for 12th last week at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
"I was happy to get the win today," Ruffels said. "I played super solid all week and knew I just had to stay steady today, which I was able to do, so I'm really happy. I'm also very happy for the team to get our first win of the season today."
Corpuz was challenging her throughout the round, ultimately taking second at 7-under 209 (71-69-69), her highest collegiate finish in a 54-hole event. Her final 3-under round gives her a team-best 13 rounds under par this year and 10 career rounds in the 60s. She has a team-best four rounds in the 60s, matching her total from last season.
Junior Alyaa Abdulghany placed a season-best fourth at 5-under 211 (72-67-72) while junior Amelia Garvey was fifth at 4-under 212 (73-70-69), matching her showing last week.
For Abdulghany, it marked her 10th career top 10 finish and she now has 10 rounds of par or better this season. She and Garvey both now have three rounds in the 60s this year.
Sophomore Malia Nam tied for 16th at 4-over 220 (74-70-76) and senior Aiko Leong, playing individually, tied for 20th at 5-over 221 (76-73-72).
