Trojans claim second straight title, putting four golfers in the top 11.
Senior Allisen Corpuz and junior Amelia Garvey each registered even rounds to lead No. 2 USC – playing with just four players – to its second straight win with a two-stroke victory at the Bruin Wave Invitational on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at the San Luis Obispo (Calif.) C.C.
The Trojans, playing without a drop score after junior Gabriela Ruffels had to withdraw in the first round Monday with an injury, led wire-to-wire in the final round, seeing its lead seesaw from one to seven strokes before finishing with a two-stroke edge at 14-over 828 (300-282-296). UCLA took second at 16-over 878 while Northwestern was third at 18-over 842.
USC's title comes a week after winning the Rebel Beach Invitational. It marks its fifth overall win at the Bruin Wave, complementing championships here in 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2018.
The last time USC won an event with four players in the final round was at the 2011 Pac-12 Championships, but the Trojans had five play in the first two rounds.
"(Assistant coach) Katie (Mitchell) and I are so proud of this group for stepping up this week and getting a win," said USC Coach Justin Silverstein, who secured his ninth career win as Trojan head coach. "We obviously missed Gabriela and hope to get her back as soon as possible. I know she's thrilled that her teammates were able to pick her up and get this done.
"This course is incredibly dicey and it took tons of discipline from Alyaa, Amelia, Allisen and Malia to finish this off with a win."
A week after putting four Trojans in the top 5, USC finished with four in the top 11, led by Garvey's fifth-place result at even 216 (75-69-72), remarkably her third straight fifth-place result. Only a late stumble on 18 kept her from a potential top 3 finish.
"I talked to Justin about it and there was two ways we could look at it. We could play the victim or step up to the challenge," Garvey said. "So I think our mindset was huge. We were ready to take on the challenge and win."
Abdulghany took sixth at 3-over 219 (71-71-77) for her second straight top 6 and her third top 8 of the season.
Nam, coming off a season-best 69 in the second round, finished a season-best tie for eighth at 5-over 221 (77-69-75), her fourth top 16 finish this year.
Corpuz tied for 11th at 6-over 222 (77-73-72), registering her team-best 14th round of par or better with a three-birdie performance.
"We always go out and give it our best regardless of the situation," Corpuz said. "We all played solidly this week and even though we only had four payers, we were able to get it done."
USC is off until the Clover Cup, set for March 13-15 in Mesa, Ariz.
