The Women of Troy suffered a close loss to the Gamecocks in their second dual at the Hilton Head Island Invitational
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – No. 4-ranked USC beach volleyball (1-1) fell to 17th-ranked South Carolina (2-4) by a 3-2 count at Coligny Beach in the Trojans' second dual at the Hilton Head Island Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 29.
USC got wins at the top court and at the No. 4 position. The Trojans' first point was scored when senior Joy Dennis and freshman Harper Hallgren completed a 21-15, 21-16 win over Madison Brabham and Hannah Edelman. The Gamecocks pushed USC's fifth pair to three sets and took an 18-16 win in the third to even the dual.
The Women of Troy went ahead again when junior Haley Hallgren and grad Hailey Harward took down Carly Schnieder and Jess Vastine, 21-16, 21-18, at the No. 1 spot. South Carolina evened the dual with a win at court two and then got the clinching point at court three. There, USC freshmen Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse won their first set, 22-20, but dropped a 21-18 decision to Avery Davis and Franky Harrison in the second. The pairs went toe-to-toe in the third, but the Gamecocks claimed a 17-15 win in the end.
This is USC's second consecutive loss to South Carolina. The Trojans also fell to the Gamecocks last season (March 12, 2019) in Atlanta. It also makes South Carolina just the second team from the East to earn more than one win over the Trojans. Florida State owns four wins over USC all-time.
USC is back in action tomorrow (Sunday, March 1) with an early match against No. 10 Grand Canyon (8:30 a.m. ET) and will conclude the tournament with a dual against No. 3 Florida State at 2:30 p.m. ET.
