Trojans tack up two strong wins in group play to advance in La Jolla.
LA JOLLA, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC women's water polo team secured its spot in the semifinals of the Triton Invitational with two strong wins in group play today in La Jolla. A five-goal outburst from Sophia Lucas helped USC roll up a 19-3 win in the morning matchup with Villanova. In the afternoon, USC saw Verica Bakoc and Denise Mammolito hit hat tricks in a 15-6 win over No. 12 Long Beach State. Now 5-0 overall, USC sets up for a semifinal bout tomorrow (Feb. 9) at 11:10 a.m. against host UC San Diego. USC is looking to work into the title match and defend its run of six consecutive championships at the Triton Invite.
USC poured out the first seven goals of the game to establish control in its first-ever meeting with Villanova. USC stayed in cruise control throughout, although Sophia Lucas hit a high gear on the offensive end in rattling in a career-high five goals to lead the charge. The final 19-3 win also featured Claire Haas' first multi-goal game with her two-goal outing, while freshman Alex Fellner scored her first goal as a Trojan in the victory. In all, 11 Trojans scored in the opener, while goalies Erin Tharp and Carolyne Stern split time in the cage to anchor the decisive USC win.
In the afternoon matchup with No. 12 Long Beach State, USC wrapped group play with another strong showing. The Trojans plugged in the first three goals in that one, leading it 3-1 at the end of the first and then staying the course for a 6-3 halftime advantage.
