Season Preview: 2021-22 USC Swim & Dive

The No. 17 USC women's and No. 23 USC men's swim programs open their 2021-22 season on Friday, Oct. 15, as the Trojans host UNLV, TCU and UC San Diego for the two-day USC Swim Invitational. Â
Tournament Information
The two-day invite will include three sessions, with the first beginning Friday at 2 p.m. Action will continue Saturday with a session at 9 a.m., followed by a session at 12:30 p.m.Â

Overview
In his first year with the Trojans, Jeremy Kipp guided USC through the 2020-21 shortened season to three Pac-12 individual titles and two top-8 individual finishes at NCAA's. Additionally, 12 student-athletes earned CSCAA Scholar All-American honors and 13 were named to the Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll last season.

Also under Kipp, the Trojans were selected as a Division 1 Scholar All-America Team with both the men's and women's programs posting grade point averages above 3.0.Â

Last season, freshman Kaitlyn Dobler earned a spot on the podium at the women's 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, touching second in the 100y breast in 57.46. She was also 11th in the 50y free (21.92). In the diving well, sophomore Nike Agunbiade won the platform consolation final (294.70) and was 14th on 1-meter (282.40).Â
A week later at the men's NCAA Championships, junior Alexei Sancov was seventh in the 200y free (1:33.64) and 11thin the 200y fly. Senior Nikola Miljenic was 14th in the 100y fly (45.63) and 29th in the 50y free (19.54).Â

At the 2021 Pac-12 Championships, Dobler swept the breastroke events, earning titles in both the 100y and 200y breast. Sancov claimed the 200y free to pick up his first conference crown and diver Nike Agunbiade won the 3-meter springboard competition. The women's team finished fourth with 1006 points, while the men were fifth with 414.Â

Program Outlook
After a condensed 2020-21 season that left many student athletes out of competition, the Trojans look to bounce back with a full 68-man roster that features 32 swimmers and divers who have never competed for USC. Of those 32, 14 are freshmen, with nine newcomers joining the men's squad and five joining the women's.Â
Â
USC will host a combined nine events at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center this season, as the Trojans will see Washington State, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, Cal and Stanford on deck for duals. In addition to this weekend's invite, USC will host the Trojan Diving Invitational (11/12-14) later this season.Â
Men's Squad Â
No. 23 USC returns multiple All-American swimmers this season, having retained every Trojan from last year's roster, while also welcoming nine newcomers.Â

Troy's 2021-22 squad features four Tokyo 2020 Olympians as Alexei Sancov (Moldova), Nikola Miljenic (Croatia), Victor Johansson (Sweden) and Vaggelis Makrygiannis (Greece) will race this season for USC.Â

Sancov looks to defend his 2021 Pac-12 individual title (200y free), while Johansson looks to reclaim his 500y free conference crown from 2019. Â

In addition to the four Olympians, freshmen Artem Selin (Krasnoyarsk, Germany), Mason Morris (Del Mar, Calif.) and Chris O'Grady (La Canada, Calif.) are among the men's swim team's top newcomers. Selin is a German national age record holder (50 SCM free), with vast experience competing at some of the top international events. Both Morris and O'Grady were Junior National qualifiers.Â

Other noteworthy returners for the Trojans include redshirt senior Mario Koenigsperger, senior Billy Cruz Zuniga, and juniors Max Saunders and Harry Homans. Both Cruz Zuniga and Saunders scored three times at last year's Pac-12's.

After missing last season due to injury, Laticia Transom is primed for a stellar senior year comeback campaign. The 2020 Pac-12 100y and 200y free champion looks to take back her crowns this season and will likely be a force at the NCAA Championships.Â

Other noteworthy returners for the Trojans include Pac-12 finalists and NCAA qualifiers Hallie Kinsey, Isabelle Odgers, Marta Ciesla and Aela Janvier.Â

A pair of 2020 Tokyo Olympians will compete for USC this season, as sophomore Anicka Delgado (Ecuador) and Marlene Kahler (Austria) will contribute their talents. Â

In addition to Austrian Olympian Kahler, freshmen Jade Hannah (Saanichton, BC, Canada) and Alice Waldow(Auckland, New Zealand) are among the women's swim team's top newcomers.Â

Also joining the squad this season is All-American and Big Ten Champion (200 breast, 400 IM), Calypso Sheridan, who transferred to USC after three seasons spent at Northwestern where she trained under then head coach, Jeremy Kipp.Â

Diving
USC's diving contingent promises to be one of the strongest in the conference. Among the returning divers are junior Nike Agunbiade, the 2021 Pac-12 3-meter champion, and All-American's Savannah Stocker and George Korovin.  This year, the Trojans welcome several accomplished divers as Sean Wang, Maddie Huitt, Grace Lee and Ky Duong join the small but mighty squad.Â

During the 2021 condensed season, Li coached three divers to NCAA qualifications with sophomore's Nike Agunbiade and George Korovin qualifying on all three boards. Stocker punched her ticket to NCAA's after an impressive performance at the Zone E Diving Championships.Â

Li also Coached USC to an additional 10 championship final appearances at the Pac-12 Diving Championships. To wrap up the season, Trojan newcomer Farah Volpintesta earned Pac-12 Women's Freshman Diver of the Year, while Li was recognized for his work, earning the 2021 Pac-12 Women's Diving Coach of the Year award, his 12th such honor.Â

Captains for this year's squad are senior swimmers Makenna Turner and Isabelle Odgers. On the men's side, senior Victor Johansson and junior David Mertz will lead the Trojans. Senior Alyson Tam and junior George Korovin will serve as diving team captains.Â
