Trojans Tied For Seventh After The Prestige First Round

Senior Kaito Onishi and junior Cameron Henry each put together par rounds while freshman Shane Ffrench posted a 1-over to lead the USC men's golf team during the first round of The Prestige on Monday (Feb. 15), at PGA West's Greg Normal Course in La Quinta, Calif.

The Trojans, looking to build on a second-place finish in its most recent event, turned in a 3-over 287, good for a tie for seventh in the 24-team field. Arizona State leads the event at 8-under with Pepperdine second at 3-under.

"I thought we did ok out there," USC Coach J.T. Higgins said. "It was like playing golf indoors. The weather was so perfect, the scoring opportunities were there but we didn't take as much advantage of them as we should have. We leaked some oil coming down the stretch and gave some back.

"Overall we still did pretty well and all five played well. We're right in it, after one round, and that's not too bad a place to be."

Henry was 3-under late in his round before bogeys on his final three holes, finishing tied for 25th with Onishi, who also bogeyed 18 following birdies on 12 and 16.

Freshman Shane Ffrench was 1-over today and is tied for 42nd while senior Leon D'Souza is tied for 53rd at 2-over and sophomore Tyler Guo is tied for 69th at 3-over.

Guo fought back from a 5-over front nine while D'Sozua finished his final eight holes at 1-under.

USC will tee off in the second round Tuesday with North Carolina and San Diego State beginning at 11:55a PT.
