USC Men's Volleyball Defeated At No. 2 BYU For Second Consecutive Night
April 02, 2021 | Men's Volleyball, Features
For the second consecutive night, the No. 2-ranked BYU men's volleyball team defeated visiting USC, this time by the score of 25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-20, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (April 2) in Provo, Utah.
BYU improved to 16-2 both overall and in the MPSF while winning its 11th straight match. USC fell to 5-10 overall and in the MPSF. It was USC's 26th consecutive loss to BYU in Provo, with Troy's last victory there over the Cougars coming in 1996.
On Thursday (April 1), the Cougars posted a 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 win over the Trojans in Provo.
For the second match in a row, USC was without head coach Jeff Nygaard, who stayed in the hotel with a non-COVID-19 related illness. Assistant coach Gary Sato filled in for Nygaard.
BYU was led by Gabi Garcia Fernandez, who had 13 kills, and Zach Eschenberg, who had 10 kills while hitting .474 and added 4 blocks. Miki Jauhiainen had 7 kills (hitting .667), Felipe de Brito Ferreira had 7 kills and 4 kills and Davide Gardini, Wil Stanley and Zach Hendrickson each had 6 digs.
For USC, Billy Fauntleroy had match bests of 14 kills and 8 digs, Brandon Browning added 13 kills, Clay Dickinson had 8 kills and 3 blocks and Cole Paxson had 6 digs.
BYU hit .310 in the match to USC's .132. The Cougars had 14.0 blocks, while the Trojans had 7.0. USC had a season-high 27 serving errors (BYU had 23).
USC held an 11-9 lead in the first set, but soon after BYU went on a 3-0 run to go up 16-13 and the Trojans could not recover.
BYU led 16-15 in the second set before it scored 3 unanswered points to build a 19-15 lead and again the Trojans could not overcome the margin.
In the third set, BYU turned a 14-13 deficit into a 20-14 lead, but USC then went on a 10-3 run to move ahead 24-23 and soon after back-to-back kills by Fauntleroy and Browning ended the set in extra time.
BYU scored 3 straight points in the fourth set to go up 12-9 and extended it to 17-13, all the cushion the Cougars needed to close out the match while hitting .429 in the set.
USC now returns home to the Galen Center next week to conclude 2021 regular season play with a pair of matches versus No. 9 Grand Canyon on Friday (April 9) and Saturday (April 10), both at 5 p.m. PT. Seed positioning for the upcoming Mountain Pacific Sports Federation will be on the line.
