No. 18 USC Women’s Tennis Stalls Out In 5-2 Loss At Pepperdine

MALIBU, CALIF. – The No. 18 USC women's tennis team battled in singles play, but failed to rally, taking a 5-2 loss at Pepperdine today in Malibu. USC goes to 10-8 overall with the loss to the Waves.
The No. 8 Waves got to work from the start and never let up, claiming the doubles point before subsequently collecting three individual victories in singles play. On court two, Pepperdine's No. 9 ranked duo of Broadus/Tjen defeated USC's Naomi Cheong and Snow Han in a 6-1 decision. The Waves followed it up with a 6-4 win on court three as Iamachkine/Pachkaleva beat Salma Ewing and Snow Morra to claim the doubles point. The match on center court was abandoned with #14 Flores/Zaar (PEP) up 5-2 over USC's #49 Eryn Cayetano and Grace Piper.
As the teams segued into singles, Pepperdine claimed the first sets on five courts, with just Trojan Naomi Cheong winning her opening set against her Wave opponent. On court four, Trojan Grace Piper fell 6-2, 6-2 to No. 109 Savannah Broadus to put the Waves up by two. Next up was No. 18 Shiori Fukuda (PEP)who defeated #6 Eryn Cayetano 6-2, 6-2 on center court.
With three points going to Pepperdine, the match was won on court three with No. 88 Janice Tjen downing Snow Han 6-4, 7-6(5) to snap Han's 13-match unbeaten streak. Even with the result decided, the match was played out as No. 22 Lisa Zaar beat #29 ranked Trojan Salma Ewing 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) on court two. Trojan Naomi Cheong swiftly followed it up with the first Trojan point of the day, downing No. 48 Victoria Flores 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 on court five. USC's final point came from Danielle Willson's 4-6,6-4,7-6(8-6) victory on court six.
USC's next action takes the Trojans to the Bay Area to take on Pac-12 rivals Stanford (March 25) and Cal (March 26).
