No. 19 USC Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 15 UCLA 4-3

Trojan senior Salma Ewing wins in doubles and singles to help the Women of Troy to a key conference win on home turf.
The No. 19 USC women's tennis team recorded a 4-3 victory to upset No. 15 UCLA on Friday (April 15) at Marks Stadium. The women of Troy improved to 17-10 (7-3) with today's win.
Today's win marked the seventh consecutive victory for USC and the first time the Trojans have beaten the Bruins in a conference match since 2017.
The Women of Troy opened up the afternoon with a celebration honoring Trojan seniors Danielle Willson and Salma Ewing. With clear skies overhead and a packed Marks Stadium, the No. 19 Women of Troy got to work in doubles play, with USC's Naomi Cheong and Grace Piper defeating the No. 56 ranked Bruin duo of Catanzarit/Forbes 6-4 on court two. USC's Danielle Willson and Snow Han battled on court three but would eventually fall to UCLA's Vagramov/Hance 7-6(6) on court three to even the field. With the doubles point still up for grabs, it came down to a thriller on center court between USC's Eryn Cayetano/ Salma Ewing and UCLA's No. 49 ranked Bolton/Wagle. Cayetano and Ewing would eventually haul in the point for USC with a 7-6(7) victory on court one to carry a one-point advantage moving into singles play.
USC carried their momentum into singles play, with the Trojans claiming first sets on five out of six courts. Trojan #73 Naomi Cheong struck first, downing UCLA's Elise Wagle 6-1, 6-3 on court five to extend the Trojans lead. Redshirt sophomore #98 Snow Han followed closely behind with a 6-3, 6-0 victory on court five to make the score 3-1 USC. With the Trojans one point away from clinching the match, the Bruins hit a hot streak, claiming three straight matches to even the score at 3-3. Grace Piper fell 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 to No. 120 Kimmi Hance (UCLA) on court four shortly before senior Danielle Willson fell to UCLA's Vanessa Ong 7-6(2), 7-5 on court six. With two courts still undecided, UCLA's No. 82 Elysia Bolton evened the score with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over USC's No. 6 ranked Eryn Cayetano. With five matches decided and the score tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to center court. During her senior day, the No. 42 ranked Salma Ewing would demonstrate her ability to "Fight On," with her ultimately defeating Bruin #28 Abigail Forbes 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to win the match for USC.
Next up, USC will hit the road for the 2022 Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championships beginning Wednesday (April 20) in Ojai, Calif.
