USC Women's Volleyball Drops Four-Set Contest at California

The Women of Troy got a match-high 22 kills from OH Skylar Fields
BERKELEY, Calif. – The USC women's volleyball team (11-7, 5-3 Pac-12) fell to California (13-6, 2-6) in four sets (25-14, 25-21, 15-25, 25-21) at Haas Pavilion on Sunday, Oct. 15.

- Sr. OH Skylar Fields led USC with 22 kills (8e, 61att, .230) and added seven digs and a block. It was her 47th time in double-digit kills as a Trojan and her 26th time with 20 or more kills in a match.
- Jr. S Mia Tuaniga put up 38 assists to go with nine digs, three kills, and a block.
- So. MB Tyrah Ariail had a match-high six blocks and had six kills (2e, 16att) on .250 hitting.
- So. LIB Gala Trubint posted 19 digs to go with five assists. It was her 38th time in double-digit digs (13th this season).
- Sr. MB Lindsey Miller scored on nine kills (1e, 19att) with .421 hitting and put up four blocks (two solo).
- For the Golden Bears, Maggie Li led with 17 kills and had seven digs. Mikayla Hayden posted 10 kills on .500 hitting and had two blocks. Annalea Maeder put up 35 assists with nine digs and six kills. Tara DeSa led all players with 22 digs.
- California out-hit USC, .239 to .228 and had the edge in kills, 52-49. The Trojans out-blocked Cal, 10-4, but the Bears had more digs (63-58) and more service aces (7-1).
- The Trojans led the Bears, 9-8, in the first, but Cal turned on the jets to run away with a 25-14 win behind .500 hitting with 14 kills as a team. USC had nine kills and hit just .100 in the opening frame.
- Fields had five kills in the second and the Trojans hit .250, but it wasn't enough to stop the Golden Bears' attack, which stayed warm at .278 with five kills from Hayden to take a 2-0 lead in the match on a 25-21 win.
- USC claimed a 25-15 win in the third. Fields led the Trojans with seven of the team's 15 kills and USC racked up 20 digs in the set to keep the Bears down at just eight kills on .059 hitting. Trubint had four digs to lead the effort. At the net, the Women of Troy posted four blocks and got the match's first ace from Trubint late in the set.
- The Bears established an early lead in the fourth and USC never got any closer than within three as Cal pulled away for a 25-21 fourth-set win. Fields had five more kills and USC hit .243 in the fourth, but Li came through with six kills to power a .262 hitting output by the Golden Bears in the win.
- USC returns home to host Washington State (17-2, 7-1 Pac-12) and Washington (13-6, 4-4) at Galen Center next weekend. The Trojans and the Cougars meet on Friday (Oct. 20) for Kids Club and Kids Corner Night at 7 p.m. PT and will be shown on a Pac-12 Insider live stream. The Women of Troy then host the Huskies for Sunday Funday (Oct. 22) in a 2 p.m. PT contest set to be covered on a USC live stream.
- USC fell to 67-13 all-time against California and had a 14-match win streak over the Golden Bears snapped. The Trojans go to 30-8 as the visitor in Berkeley and fall to Cal at Haas Pavilion for the first time since 2009 (Oct. 31).
- The Women of Troy fall to 3-7 in 10 road matches this season.
- The Trojans go to 46-50 all-time in Bay Area cities.
