No. 25 USC Women’s Basketball Comes Up Just Short Of Season Sweep Of No. 3 Stanford
February 17, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Trojans fall 50-47 in a defensive battle at Maples Pavilion.
LOS ANGELES — The No. 25 USC women's basketball team took No. 3 Stanford down to the wire on the Cardinal's home court, coming up just short of forcing overtime in taking a 50-47 loss tonight at Maples Pavilion. The Trojans were looking for their first season sweep of Stanford since 1986-87, but the Cardinal got the breaks it needed to avenge USC's upset of then-No. 2 Stanford last month. USC is now 19-7 overall and 9-6 in Pac-12 play, while Stanford goes to 25-3, 13-2.
The lead changed hands four times in the first half as USC's 3-point game countered inside efforts from the Cardinal. Stanford would stretch out ahead with a late push to end the half, leading it 32-26 at the break on 41-percent shooting from the floor. USC had shot 28 percent from the floor in those first 20 minutes, but was 5-of-11 from 3-point range to keep Stanford in its sights. The Cardinal had the slim lead on the boards, up 21-20 on the rebounding front by halftime. USC would land eight 3-pointers in the game, but came up just one short of forcing overtime against the Cardinal, who finished up shooting 35.6 percent from the floor to outpace USC's season-low 22.2 percent overall. USC and Stanford would match each other with 43 rebounds apiece.
USC received a game-high 15 points from Destiny Littleton along with 13 from Okako Adika, while Clarice Akunwafo pulled in a career-high 12 rebounds for the Trojans. Adika and Kayla Williams each hit three 3-pointers for USC. Stanford had seven players score on the night, led by Cameron Brink's 12 points and 10 rebounds. Haley Jones also had 10 boards for the Cardinal.
USC was effective from beyond the arc in manufacturing an early 8-0 rally to lead it 8-2 three minutes into the game. Okako Adika buried two of those threes for the Trojans, and Destiny Littleton added one of her own to answer a Stanford three-point play, making it an 11-5 Trojan advantage with 6:05 on the clock. The Cardinal carved back in, getting it to a one-point margin with 3:20 left in the quarter. Littleton would land a pair of free throws, but Stanford managed two buckets in the paint to edge ahead 18-17 at the close of the first. USC's 3-point play got the Trojans back on top in the next stretch, with Kayla Williams and Adika each burying back-to-back blasts to edge USC on top 23-22 at 6:05. Stanford continued to strike back, however, ending the half by outscoring the Trojans 6-1 in the final three minutes to lead it 32-26 at halftime.
The Cardinal found its 3-point touch early in the third, landing a pair around one from Williams to go up 40-29 with 7:55 on the clock. But Williams wasn't done. She'd land another three for the Trojan cause, and Kadi Sissoko joined the party 20 seconds later to get USC closer, down 40-35 at the midway point of the third. Again Stanford would find the final shot of the quarter, and USC was down 49-37 entering the fourth. Early free throws fell for Stanford before USC got back-to-back buckets from Littleton and Sissoko to get back within five. Stanford would get up 48-41 with 5:40 to go before Okako Adika scored four straight points — two free throws and a long two — to make it a three-point game with 1:40 remaining. It was still a three-point game in the final minute after Littleton followed a Stanford score in the paint with free throws to make it 50-47 with 38 ticks to go. USC got the defensive stop and called timeout with 3.8 seconds but was unable to land the equalizer, leaving the No. 3 Cardinal with the tight 50-47 home win.
