No. 3 USC Men’s Water Polo Revs Up For MPSF Semifinal Slot
November 22, 2024 | Men's Water Polo
Trojans take down Austin College 31-2 in the quarterfinals behind an eight-goal effort by Jack Martin.
WESTWOOD, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC men's water polo team took a solid step toward the MPSF Tournament semifinals with a 31-2 win over Austin College in today's quarterfinals at Spieker Aquatics Center in Westwood, Calif. Solid Trojan defense grabbed 14 steals and notched seven field blocks in the win, with a runaway offensive effort that saw Jack Martin and Zac Crenshaw tally career-high scoring efforts. Martin and Crenshaw led with eight and four goals, respectively, and Jake Carter, Andrej Grgurevic and Zach Bettino each tallied hat tricks to help USC improve to 19-5 overall. The Trojans will turn to face No. 2 Stanford in tomorrow's semifinals showdown.
Robert López Duart drew first blood on the counter from a Carson Kranz steal. After a Max Miller conversion on a 6-on-5 and a Stefan Brankovic penalty jam, Martin grabbed two quick back-to-back goals to build up USC's lead to 5-0. Four more goals and a huge penalty block from Bernardo Herzer allowed the Trojans to slide into the second quarter up 9-0. The Kangaroos would remain scoreless until two minutes into the second, while the Trojans piled up 11 straight scores in the meantime. Charles Mills checked in for work in the cage, and Grgurevic and Carter each knocked down two goals apiece, taking the USC up to 16-1 at the half. Mills captured his second career double-digit save effort, including eight saves in the second half. Martin grabbed another hat trick in the third and two new Trojan scorers – Carson Kranz and Luka Brnetic – reached the back of the net in the second half to round out the 31-2 win.
