No. 21 USC Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 8 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 21-ranked USC women's volleyball team (19-9, 11-7 Big Ten) was defeated in straight sets (25-22, 29-27, 25-20) by No. 8 Purdue (23-6, 14-4) at Holloway Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 23.

- Sr. S Mia Tuaniga put up 42 assists and recorded six digs, a block, and a kill.
- Gr. OH Ally Batenhorst tied for team-high honors with 14 kills and added eight digs and four blocks.
- Jr. LIB Gala Trubint had a match-high 21 digs for her 66th-career match in double digits: her 16th match with 20 or more.
- Redshirt So. OH Adonia Faumuina totaled 14 kills with seven digs and two blocks.
- Fr. MB Favor Anyanwu scored six kills (1e, 13att, .385) and had five blocks.
- Redshirt Jr. MB Tyrah Ariail tallied five kills (2e, 15att, .200) to go with three blocks, three digs, and a service ace.
- For the Boilermakers, Eva Hudson led all players with 18 kills (6e, 55att, .218) and added seven digs and four blocks. Raven Colvin scored 14 kills (3e, 22att) and hit .500 with a match-high seven blocks (three solo). Taylor Anderson had 37 assists and 10 digs for the double-double and added four kills and three blocks.
- The Trojans led by as many as six points in the opening frame at 11-5 and went up by two, 22-20, on a block by Anyanwu and Tuaniga. The Boilermakers' longest run of the set came at the end—a costly 5-0 burst for the Trojans—as Purdue claimed set one, 25-22, behind five kills from Hudson and four from Colvin. Batenhorst led USC's attack with five kills while Faumuina collected three in the Trojans' .182 hitting effort. Purdue hit .275 to close the set with 16 kills (5e) on 40 swings.
- USC led set two by three several times and held the same 22-20 lead before the Boilermakers tied the set for the eighth time at 24-all. The Women of Troy saved three set points but came up on the short end of a 29-27 Purdue win that put the Boilers in front, 2-0. Batenhorst logged six more kills and Faumuina put up five. Trubint dug up 11 balls and the Trojan defense added three more blocks. Both teams had 20 kills, and USC had the edge in hitting, .292 to .273.
- The Women of Troy led the third by as many as five but were caught at 11-all for only the second tie of the frame. The teams went back and forth until Purdue pulled away to lead by as many as three several times. The Boilermakers closed out the straight-set win with a kill by Colvin. Faumuina had six of her kills in the third and Batenhorst added three. Trubint led the defense with four digs and Tuaniga dished out 13 assists in the third.
- USC is on the road for one more regular season match at Washington (19-8, 9-8 Big Ten) on Wednesday (Nov. 27). The Trojans and Huskies will meet for the second time this season when the teams clash at Alaska Airlines Arena for a 4:30 p.m. Thanksgiving-eve match. The Women of Troy will then host Iowa (10-19, 4-13) for Senior Night at Galen Center on Friday (Nov. 29). USC will honor Lindsey Miller, Grae Gosnell, Ally Batenhorst, Tyrah Ariail, and Mia Tuaniga in pre-match ceremonies and will take on the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. PT. Both contests will be shown on Big Ten Plus streams.
- USC fell to 6-1 all-time against Purdue, which includes a 3-1 mark in West Lafayette. The Boilermakers not only defeated the Trojans for the first time in seven meetings but won more than one set in a match against USC for the first time.
- The Women of Troy dropped to 12-2 all-time in the state of Indiana.
