USC Baseball Falls to BYU in Opener at MLB Desert Invitational

MESA, Ariz. – The USC baseball team dropped its season opener at the MLB Desert Invitational on Friday night, falling 8-1 to BYU.
The Cougar bats posted 12 hits and took advantage of a pair of USC miscues to grab an early lead and never relinquish it. The Trojans scored one run in the fifth to cut it to a 3-1 deficit, but BYU came right back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
BYU scored three runs (two unearned) in the second inning to grab the early lead.
Ryan Jackson posted USC's lone RBI with a sac fly in the fifth inning. Jackson's sac fly was made possible by a leadoff triple from Austin Overn in the inning.
Ben Hansen picked up the win for BYU, giving up one run in 5.0 innings. Caden Aoki took the loss for the Trojans, also tossing 5.0 innings while allowing five runs, three of which were earned.

The Trojans continue play at the Desert Invitational on Saturday when they face Grand Canyon at 6 pm MT/5 pm PT. USC closes play at the season-opening tournament on Sunday against Ohio State. Saturday's game will be broadcast on MLB Network and Sunday's contest will be on MLB.tv.
