No. 9 USC Women’s Tennis Battles Back to Beat No. 11 Cal 4-3

LOS ANGELES – The No. 9 ranked USC women's tennis team downed the No. 11 ranked Golden Bears on Sunday, March 31 as the Trojans overcame an early deficit to beat Cal 4-3.
Down 3-1 early in the match, the Women of Troy would battle back to ultimately take the match and improve to 5-1 in conference play. With the win, the Trojans now stand at 14-6, while Cal drops to 12-4.
USC claimed the doubles point against the Golden Bears, winning matches on courts three and one. First, the No. 42 ranked duo of Parker Fry and Grace Piper defeated Folch/Wiersholm 6-2 on court three. Moments later, Cal's Jessica Alsola and Valentina Ivanov downed the USC duo of Lily Fairclough and McKenna Koenig 7-6(7). The doubles point was decided on center court as the No. 15 ranked duo of Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney overcame a 2-5 early deficit to claim the match 7-5 over Cal's No. 23 ranked Mao Mushika and Hannah Viller Moeller.
Moving into singles play, Cal would strike first as No. 57 Valentine Ivanov beat No. 93 Snow Han 6-4, 6-1 on center court. With the score tied at one point all, an unfortunate Trojan injury retirement would occur on court six, giving Cal their second point of the day. The Golden Bears got their third and final point of the day on court five as No.125 Mushika beat McKenna Koenig 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
The Women of Troy would battle back, winning three straight singles matches to down the No. 11 ranked Golden Bears 4-3. No. 61 ranked Grace Piper beat No. 53 ranked Katja Wiersholm 6-3, 7-6(9-7) on court three before No. 108 Eryn Cayetano won a three-setter over No. 54 Jessica Alsola (3-6, 6-1, 6-4).
With the score tied at 3-3, the match was decided on court two as No. 28 Emma Charney would overcome a 2-5 deficit in a second-set tie-break to ultimately down Cal's No. 38 ranked Hannah Viller Moeller 6-2, 7-6(5). Charney won five straight points to clinch the match for the Trojans.
USC is back in action next weekend as the Trojans hit the road for a Friday 12:30 p.m. match at No. 74 Colorado, and a Sunday 10 a.m. match at No. 44 Utah.
