April 12, 2024 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – The USC baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision in the opening game of a three-game series at No. 18 Oregon on Friday night in Eugene.
USC falls to 16-17 overall and 9-6 in Pac-12 play. Oregon moves to 24-9 overall and 9-4 in conference action. The loss snaps a five-game winnings streak for the Trojans.
USC scored first with a sacrifice fly from Ethan Hedges in the opening frame, but Oregon came back to put up a run in each of the next three innings to take a 3-1 lead. The USC offense was never able to produce a rally after that. Jacob Galloway was robbed of a two-run homer in the fifth, but USC was only able to put one more runner on until the ninth.
Tyler Stromsborg kept USC in the game through his 6.1 innings pitched, with just two of the runs he gave up being earned. Stromsborg scattered seven hits, walked none and struck out four. Xavier Martinez pitched the next 1.2 innings, giving up just an unearned run.
USC got a leadoff double from Ryan Jackson in the ninth inning and Ethan Hedges walked, but Oregon closer Logan Mercado came in and got the next two outs to finish the game.
