Adonia Faumuina tagged 16 balls for kills to lead the Trojans to a 3-0 win over crosstown rival UCLA at Galen Center

LOS ANGELES – The No. 22-ranked USC women's volleyball team (16-5, 7-4 Big Ten) exacted revenge for an earlier loss with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) of crosstown rival UCLA (12-9, 6-5) at Galen Center on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The Women of Troy have won six of their last seven matches including five in a row, which equals a season-long streak (Aug. 29-Sept. 7).

KEY PLAYERS

RS Jr. OH Adonia Faumuina led the Trojans with 16 kills (4e, 39att) and hit .308 to go with two blocks.
Fr. S Reese Messer handed out 42 assists and had a match-high 13 digs to log her ninth double-double. She also added a kill and a block to finish the night with 1.5 points.
RS So. OH London Wijay tagged 11 balls for kills (2e, 29att) on .310 hitting and had seven digs and a service ace.
Fr. OPP Abigail Mullen totaled 11 kills (4e, 22att) and hit .318 with three blocks and four digs.
So. MB Mia Tvrdy turned in an eight-kill performance (3e, 17att, .294) to go with four blocks and a pair of digs.
Fr. LIB Taylor Deckert dug up 11 balls for her 12th time in double digits and added five assists.
For the Bruins, Maggie Li and Cheridyn Leverette had 11 kills apiece to lead the UCLA attack. Li added six digs and Leverette had four. Mariana Singletary had nine kills and led the Bruins with three blocks. Brooklyn Briscoe scored seven kills and had two digs. Kate Duffey put up 35 assists to go with eight digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC logged more kills (51-42), assists (48-39), digs (46-45), and blocks (6.5-4.0) than UCLA. Both teams had a pair of service aces, but the Trojans won the service line by a 13-8 margin.
The Trojans led by as many as five in a first set that was tied nine times before they pocketed a 25-23 win. Wijay had five kills, Faumuina had four, and Mullen and Tvrdy had three each. USC totaled 17 kills but hit .200 below UCLA's .294 with 13 kills. The Women of Troy racked up 16 digs in the opening frame led by five from Messer and four from Wijay. After trailing for much of the beginning of the set, the Bruins used a 4-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. The teams went point for point until a 3-0 run on kills from Wijay and Mullen put the Trojans at the doorstep, 24-22.
UCLA turned the tables on the Trojans in set two and led by as many as five at 11-6. USC turned on the jets to mount a comeback that equalized the score at 16-all on back-to-back blocks. Mullen cut down an overpass to make it 20-18 but the Bruins continued to push back and went ahead two more times before Mullen's block made it 24-22 and her crosscourt shot terminated the set in a 25-23 Trojan win.
USC hit .405 in the third and logged 20 kills in a 25-20 win to complete the sweep. Faumuina led the charge with seven kills on 14 swings while Wijay had five kills on nine attacks. Mullen racked another four kills and Tvrdy picked up a pair. Messer handed out 17 assists and had six digs in set three. Deckert picked up seven digs. UCLA hit .324 and had 14 kills (2e) on 37 attacks.

UP NEXT

The Women of Troy open the month of November on the road and will face No. 20 Minnesota (16-5, 6-4 Big Ten) at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday (Nov. 1). The match will be shown live on a Big Ten Plus stream and first serve is set for 8 p.m. CT (6 p.m. PT).

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 67-59 all-time against UCLA and split the regular-season series.
The Trojans moved to 11-2 at home and to 227-62 all-time at Galen Center.
The Women of Troy won their fifth straight match to equal the season's longest streak (Aug. 29-Sept. 7).
USC swept an opponent for the eighth time this season.
