USC Men’s Tennis Finishes the Punchline with 4-3 Victory Over UCLA
April 01, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis (11-6, 5-2 Big Ten) emerged triumphant Tuesday night, defeating crosstown rival UCLA (8-7, 6-1 Big Ten) in a 4-3 thriller at David X. Marks tennis stadium.
The Trojans fell to an early 1-0 deficit after dropping a tightly contested doubles point. The Bruins grabbed the first court with a 7-6 (6) win on court three, while graduate Tristan Bradley and senior Makk battled to even the score with a 7-5 win on court one. However, a 6-4 UCLA win on court two gave the Bruins the match's first point.
Once singles play started, the Trojans flipped a switch, swinging the match's momentum in their favor. Senior Karl Lee put USC on the board with a quick, 6-2, 6-4 victory on court six, while freshman Nathan Trouve bounced back after losing his first set to take a 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two. No. 26 Makk followed quickly behind, defeating No. 34 Rudy Quan 6-4, 6-4 to score the Trojans' third unanswered point.
After the Bruins evened the score with wins on courts three and five, all eyes turned to junior Oscar Weightman on court four. Weightman was 0-3 this season in singles play entering the match and was narrowly edged out in the first set 5-7. However, the junior turned in his best performance of the season when the pressure was on, storming to a 6-4, 6-3 victory in sets two and three to clinch the victory for USC.
With the victory, the Trojans improve to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in conference play, completing the season sweep of their crosstown rivals. Next, the Trojans will hit the road against Penn State (1 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 4) and No. 3 Ohio State (9 a.m. on Sunday, Apr. 6) this weekend.
