May 03, 2025 | Women's Tennis
The Trojans got a win at the No. 5 position from freshman Simone Kay but were ultimately eliminated in the second round.
BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 18 USC women's tennis team (17-8) fell to the No. 13 ranked LSU Tigers (23-7) 4-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the LSU Tennis Complex on Saturday, May 3.
With the loss, USC's season officially ends at 17-8 overall. LSU advances to the NCAA Super Regional in Columbus, Ohio next weekend. The Trojans struggled to find momentum against the Tigers, dropping the doubles point and three singles matches on Saturday.
In doubles, USC fell on center court and court two, dropping the early point. USC's Jana Hossam and Sloane Morra fell 6-2 to Graham/Sahdiieva on court two, moments before the No. 5 ranked duo of Cadence Brace and Kayla Cross beat USC's No. 12 ranked pair of Lily Fairclough and Grace Piper 6-3. With the doubles point decided, play was suspended on court three, with USC's Parker Fry and Emma Charney leading 5-2.
Moving into singles play with a one-point deficit to overcome, USC won first sets on four courts, including a tiebreak on court six. LSU had the Trojans in a corner after winning back-to-back singles matches on courts three and one. LSU's Tilwith Di Girolami beat Lily Fairclough 7-5, 6-1 on court three just moments before No. 11 ranked Cadence Brace downed senior No. 50 ranked Grace Piper 6-2, 6-2 on center court to put the Tigers one point away from a win.
The Women of Troy then saw a glimmer of hope as freshman Simone Kay stepped up and won her first-ever singles dual match in NCAA play, beating Kinaa Graham 7-5, 6-3 on court five. With the win, the Trojans were on the board, but it would be too little too late as No. 49 ranked Kayla Cross would down No. 81 ranked Emma Charney 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on court two to solidify the win for LSU.
