June 23, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The College Baseball Hall of Fame announced its 2025 class this week and USC baseball great Mark McGwire was among those to be inducted.
McGwire, who played at USC from 1982-84 before going on to have an all-time great MLB career, is one of 21 inductees named to this year's class.
McGwire, who was named the National Player of the Year in 1984, was not only one of USC's greatest hitters, but also had a stellar career on the mound during his three collegiate seasons at USC under legendary Head Coach Rod Dedeaux.
At the plate, McGwire hit .334 in his 149 career games, compiling 54 home runs, 150 RBI, 135 runs scored and an 1.166 OPS. His 32 home runs in 1984 are still the single season record for USC, as are his 216 total bases from that season. McGwire's 54 career homers and .718 career slugging percentage are both all-time career records at USC as well.
In addition to playing first for the Trojans, McGwire spent two seasons on the mound at USC (1982-83), posting a 2.93 ERA in 83.0 career innings as both a reliever and starter. He struck out 57 batters, with two saves and a career record of 7-5.
McGwire was a First-Team All-American, the 1984 Pac-10 Player of the Year and named to the All-District 8 and All-Pac-12 first teams during his time at USC.
He went on to be drafted 10th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 1984 MLB Draft, playing a total of 16 seasons with the A's and St. Louis Cardinals. He famously broke the MLB single-season home run record with 70 homers in 1998 and finished his career with 583 long balls. McGwire was named the AL Rookie of the Year in 1987 and went on to make nine All-Star appearances, win one Gold Glove Award and win one Silver Slugger Award. He also won a World Series with the A's in 1989 and finished in the Top 5 in MVP voting three different times, including being second in 1998.
McGwire is the 10th player in Trojan history to be named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame since its inception in 2006. He joins Rod Dedeaux (2006), Fred Lynn (2007), Roy Smalley (2013), Bill Bordley (2014), Wally Hood (2019), Rich Dauer (2021), Art Mazmanian (2022), Steve Kemp (2023) and Bill Thom (2024).
The 18th induction class will be honored at the 2026 Night of Champions presented by Prairiefire on February 12, 2026 in Overland Park, Kansas, the home of the College Baseball Hall of Fame. The event will serve as the ceremonial start to the 2026 college baseball season, which begins on February 13, 2026.
