London Wijay racked her second double-double of the season in a win over Western Michigan

LOS ANGELES – The 16th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (6-1) collected a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) of Western Michigan (1-8) to conclude the LMU Invitational at Gersten Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 12.

KEY PLAYERS

RS So. OH London Wijay produced her second double-double (11th career) with 11 kills and a match- and season-high 13 digs. She hit .259 (4e) on 27 swings and added three blocks (one solo).
Fr. OPP Abigail Mullen also had 11 kills (2e, 21att) and hit .429 to go with five digs, a service ace, and a block.
Fr. S Reese Messer dished out 38 assists and had eight digs, three kills, and two blocks.
RS Fr. OH Brooklyn Tealer scored six kills (2e, 19att, .211) with three blocks and had one dig.
So. MB Mia Tvrdy put up seven kills (2e, 18att, .278) with four blocks.
Fr. LIB Taylor Deckert delivered seven digs and had a pair of assists with a service ace. Sr. DS Gala Trubint had seven digs.
RS So. MB Leah Ford recorded seven kills (1e, 15att, .400) with three blocks and two digs.
For the Broncos Mary Clare Brusek led with 10 kills and five blocks (one solo). Keely Culler scored eight kills while Annalise Patchett totaled six kills. Elana Erickson led WMU with 10 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans hit .324 (45k, 11e, 105att) over the Broncos' .147 (31k, 16e, 102att) and finished with more digs (46-43), blocks (8.5-7.0) and service aces (4-3). USC had a big 44-31 edge in assists: one for all but one kill.
It took 11 ties, but the Trojans broke away to get a 25-18 win in set one. Messer dished out 17 assists—one for all but one of USC's 18 first-set kills—and had her team hitting .387 (6e, 31att). The Women of Troy picked up 15 digs led by four apiece from Trubint and Deckert. The Broncos led by as many as three at 12-9 on the back end of a 5-1 run, but the Trojans used a 6-1 run to get on top for the last time at 20-16. Wijay had six of her kills in the opening set while Mullen, Ford, Tvrdy, and Tealer each totaled three kills apiece for good measure.
USC went up, 2-0, with a 25-22 win in the second set. Mullen racked up five of her kills and Wijay tacked on three more to power a Trojan offense that hit .273 in the frame (15k, 3e, 44att) over Western Michigan's .213 (16k, 6e, 47att). Wijay had the floor covered with eight digs in the set while Messer had four to go with 11 more assists. It was back-to-back Mullen kills that broke a seven-all tie and put USC in front for good. The Trojans led by as many as four at 19-15, but Culler didn't let that age long as she scored three kills as part of a 4-1 WMU run that brought the Broncos within a point at 20-19. WMU closed within one again at 23-22 before Mullen's kill put set point on the board and a Bronco error ended the frame.
The Trojans scored the first four points of the third and never trailed en route to a 25-16 win to complete the Bronco sweep. Messer topped off her night with 10 more assists and guided USC to a .333 hitting rate (12k, 2e, 30att). The Trojans picked up three more blocks and had 13 digs including four more from Wijay to hold the WMU attack to a .074 hitting percentage (8k, 6e, 27att).

UP NEXT

USC closes nonconference play with a trio of matches at Galen Center next week. The Trojans take on LSU in back-to-back night matches on Thursday (Sept. 18) and Friday (Sept. 19). Both contests will begin at 7 p.m. PT and be shown live on Big Ten Plus. The Women of Troy then face their first former Pac-12 opponent (not in the Big Ten) since the realignment of the conference in 2022 when California visits for a Sunday matinee (Sept. 21). The Trojans and Bears—plaintiff and defendant—will be shown live in a court battle on Big Ten Network with first serve set for 2 p.m.
