Emma Bunting totaled four points and posted her sixth-career hat trick against the Terrapins
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The USC lacrosse team (6-6, 0-4 Big Ten) was defeated, 13-7, by third-ranked Maryland (10-0, 2-0) at SECU Stadium on Sunday, March 22. The Trojans have lost four straight games, all to ranked opponents including the last three to teams in the top 10 of the IWLCA coaches poll.

- Jr. attacker Emma Bunting logged her third hat trick of the season (sixth of her career) with three goals and totaled four points with an assist.
- Redshirt Jr. midfielder Hollis Mulry scored a pair of goals, picked up two ground balls, and had a caused turnover.
- Jr. attacker Reese Robinson totaled two points (1g, 1a) and pulled in five draw controls to go with a caused turnover.
- Sr. defender Kate Gerrity caused a pair of Maryland turnovers and picked up a ground ball.
- So. defender Sophie Gangemi picked up a team-high four ground balls and had one caused turnover.
- In goal, Jr. Annie Shields faced 31 shots and produced eight saves.
- For the Terrapins, Keeley Block led with four goals and had an assist to go with two ground balls. Lauren LaPointe led all scorers with six points (3g, 3a) and Kori Edmondson had three goals and two assists as the third Maryland player to record a hat trick in the game. JJ Suriano had seven saves in goal and picked up a pair of ground balls.
- The Terrapins out-shot USC, 31-19, but the Trojans won the fight for ground balls by a 15-14 edge.
- Mulry took a pass from Bunting just over a minute in and scored the first goal of the contest to give USC a 1-0 lead. Edmondson registered her first goal at 10:18 to pull the Terps even in a defensive battle that left the teams tied, 1-1, at the end of 15 minutes. Both teams took five shots each and both goalies had a pair of saves by the end of the first.
- In the second quarter, Bunting rolled the crease to score, and Robinson scored her goal from free position, but the Trojans found themselves on the short end of a 6-2 burst by the Terrapins who took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
- The Terrapins scored back-to-back goals to open the second half and went ahead by six, 9-3. Robinson dished to Mulry who scored through contact to end the Terp run and brough the Trojans within five. Block and LaPointe scored consecutive goals to give the Terrapins their largest lead at 11-4 with 3:48 to play in the third quarter, but Bunting dodged several Maryland defenders to get to goal for her second of the day and made it 11-5 at the end of three.
- Bunting's stick fake set her up with a third goal four minutes into the fourth and then Syndey Stewart picked up a ball and went to goal to score to make it a 3-0 USC run to pull the Trojans within four at 11-7. The Terrapins steadied their defense and got goals from Edmondson and LaPointe down the stretch to hold off the USC comeback and closed out the win.
- USC returns home to host Rutgers (6-4, 1-1 Big Ten) at Rawlinson Stadium for a Saturday (March 28) afternoon matchup at 3 p.m. PT. The Trojans and the Scarlet Knights will be shown live nationally on a Big Ten Network broadcast.
- USC fell to 0-2 all-time against Maryland.
- The Trojans moved to 2-3 in road games this season.
- USC dropped to 1-6 against ranked opponents this season (32-54 all-time) and to 12-26 all-time against teams ranked in the top 10. The Trojans played their fourth straight ranked opponent and third straight top-10 foe.
- The Trojans fell to 23-26 in games played in the Eastern Time Zone and moved to 0-4 in the state of Maryland.
