USC Track and Field Wins Three Events on the First Day of Outdoor Season Opener

LOS ANGELES – The USC track and field throws squad kicked off the outdoor season on Friday at the Colich Throws Center to start the Ron and Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational. Three Trojans placed first in their events while five others placed in the top three.
Women's discus throwers started the day off strong with Ashley Erasmus placing second with a new personal best of 55.10m. Reese Garland came in fourth place with a mark of 53.69m.
The Trojan men swept the men's discus with school record-holder Racquil Broderick in the top spot with a best throw of 62.87m, coming within striking distance of his current record of 63.31m. Vincent Ugwoke got a mark of 58.63m in his Trojan debut to take second. Right behind Ugwoke was Mico Lampinen in the third spot with a mark of 57.37m in his collegiate debut.
Taking the momentum from a top-three finish, Lampinen then took first place in the men's hammer throw with a best mark of 64.24m. Matteo Mitchell started off his senior season strong with a personal-best throw of 63.49m to place second.
The Women of Troy ended the day with two podium finishes at women's hammer throw. Jenna Gallaway earned gold with a throw of 59.34m. Karyssa Owens took third place with a best throw of 56.21m.
The entire USC track and field crew will open the outdoor season on campus tomorrow. Field events are set to start at 11 a.m. with running events beginning at 12 p.m at Allyson Felix FIeld.
