USC Lacrosse Takes Down Niagara in 19-10 Win

The Trojans used a 15-0 run to cruise to a victory over the Purple Eagles
LOS ANGELES – The USC lacrosse team (6-2) racked a 19-10 win over Niagara (1-6) at Rawlinson Stadium on Sunday, March 8.

- Jr. midfielder Anna Regan dominated the center circle with 19 draw controls—one short of tying her own school record—to log her ninth-career game in double digits and finished the day with two points earned on one goal and one assist.
- Redshirt Jr. midfielder Hollis Mulry logged her first-career hat trick with three goals and became the 40th Trojan all-time to produce a hat trick, the seventh different player this season. She also had one caused turnover and a ground ball.
- So. attacker Vivian Leuthold matched her career high with four goals to log her second-career hat trick game.
- Jr. attacker Reese Robinson led all players with five points earned on a career-high four assists and one goal. She also had a ground ball and was credited with a caused turnover.
- So. goalie Ellie Thomas played the first three quarters and picked up three saves to go with a ground ball.
- So. attacker Kaylee Fravert dished out three assists and scored a goal to total four points with one ground ball.
- So. defender Sophie Gangemi snagged one ground ball and scored her first-career goal off a free-position attempt.
- Sr. midfielder Casey Roberts scored a pair of goals, grabbed two draw controls, and picked up a ground ball.
- For the Purple Eagles, Michaela Delles led with four points (2g, 2a). Off the bench, Abberly Dela Rosa scored two goals and starters Emma Alexander and Maeve Partlow each scored one. Ella Wambach led all players with three ground balls while Maddy Gill and Sydney Huhtala each had three caused turnovers.Â
- USC had its way in the center circle and out-drew the Eagles, 23-7. The Trojans had more shots (40-22) and ground balls (20-16) as well. Both teams had more than 15 turnovers in the game; USC with 16 and Niagara with 19.
- The Purple Eagles got on the board first on a goal from Delles. Leuthold scored from free position to equalize, but Niagara pressured USC into five turnovers and scored four in a row to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Fravert took a dish from Robinson to score the first goal of the second quarter and spurred the Trojans to an incredible 9-0 run for a 10-5 lead at halftime. Leuthold's goal with 29 seconds to play gave her a hat trick and put USC ahead, 9-5. The Trojans won the next draw and attacked immediately to draw a foul in the critical-scoring area with just five seconds left on the clock. Jr. attacker Emma Bunting put her free-position shot past the Eagle goalie to make it 10-5 at the break.
- USC continued to push and scored six straight goals to open the third quarter. Robinson found So. midfielder Alex May on the crease for a goal to get things started and Mulry took a pass from Fravert to score the Trojans' 15th straight goal for a 16-5 lead with 9:18 still to play in the third. Niagara snapped the Trojan run with a goal by Olivia Ng, but USC scored two more to make it 18-6 at the end of three pieces.
- Niagara made the most of the fourth quarter as the Purple Eagles scored four goals to stop the running clock and closed to within eight goals with 2:17 to play. So. midfielder Skylar May scored one more at 1:29 to punctuate the Trojan win and made the final score 19-10.
- USC opens Big Ten play next week and hosts No. 17 Penn State (8-0) on Thursday night (March 12) under the Rawlinson Stadium lights for a 6 p.m. PT first draw. On Sunday (March 15), No. 8-ranked Michigan (5-2) comes to Los Angeles to take on the Trojans for a 1 p.m. game. Both games will be shown live on Big Ten Plus.
- USC and Niagara met for the first time.
- The Trojans improved to 4-1 at home on Rawlinson Stadium grass.Â
