Four Trojans scored in double digits in a big road win over the Cougars

PROVO, Utah – The fourth-ranked USC men's volleyball team (17-4, 9-3 MPSF) took down No. 10 BYU (20-9, 7-5) in five sets (19-25, 29-27, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12) at George Albert Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday, April 11.

KEY PLAYERS

Sr. OH Dillon Klein led the Trojans with 17.5 points earned on 16 kills (7e, 34att, .265) to go with four digs, two blocks, and two assists. It was his 79th-career match in double-digit kills in 98 contests.
So. MB Parker Tomkinson had 12.5 points on 10 kills (2e, 18att, .444) for his first time in double digits and had four blocks.
Jr. S Caleb Blanchette put up 49 assists and had eight digs, two blocks, a kill, and a service ace.
So. OH Christian Connell had nine kills, three digs, and four assists.
Redshirt So. MB Wesley Smith picked up nine kills (1e, 11att) and hit .727 to go with a pair of blocks for 10.0 points.
Redshirt Jr. OPP Noah Roberts totaled 10.0 points earned on seven kills (2e, 14att, .357) and three blocks (one solo).
For the Cougars, Trent Moser had a career-high 26 kills (7e, 42att) and hit .452. Connor Oldani scored 18 kills (3e, 30att) to hit .500 with six digs and four blocks. Trevor Herget had 14 kills (5e, 33att, .273) with four digs. Tyler Herget had 63 assists, three digs, and two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC hit over .300 for the 17th time (.316) with 60 kills (23e) on 117 attempts. The Cougars hit at a .386 clip with 68 kills (19e) on 127 attacks. BYU also had more assists, 67-57, and a slight edge in service aces, 5-4. Both teams had nine blocks each and the Trojans held up a 27-24 edge in digs.
The Cougars took the first set, 25-19, behind .643 hitting (11k, 2e) on just 14 attacks. BYU put up 3.5 blocks as part of an effort to hold the Trojans to a .200 outing with 11 kills (7e) on 20 swings. Each team had only one dig in the opening frame. Klein and Smith each had three kills in set one and Trevor Herget and Moser had three each for BYU.
Down, 18-17, USC used a 6-1 run to go in front 23-19, but the Cougars had other plans and reeled off four in a row to knot the score for the 15th time at 23-all. Tomkinson scored the next kill, for 24-23, but BYU would save four set points. With the score tied, 27-all, and for the 20th time in the frame, Tyler Herget's service error gave USC a fifth set-point opportunity on which Cooper Keane would collect his fifth kill of the night to end it, 29-27, to even the match. USC hit .440 with 15 kills (4e) on 25 swings over BYU's .233 (14k, 7e, 30att).
BYU took the third, 25-18, with 17 kills (2e, 30att) and .500 hitting. Moser was responsible for nine of those himself. The Cougars put up a pair of blocks and had six digs to hold USC to .194 hitting (12k, 6e) on 31 swings. BYU also served the only ace of the set as Trevor Herget delivered the winning point from behind the service line.
The Trojans used a 4-0 run to go ahead, 9-6, in the fourth and were never tied and never trailed again on the way to a 25-21 win to force set five. Both teams turned in 17 kills in the set, but the Trojans hit .448 (4e) on 29 attacks against the Cougars' .438 who needed 32 swings (3e). Roberts knocked down six of his kills in the fourth while Klein, Tomkinson, and Smith each had three. Moser had six kills for BYU.
An ace from Roberts put USC in front, 7-3, early in the fifth, but the Cougars stormed back with a 7-2 run to take a 10-9 lead. Klein went crosscourt for his 16th kill to make it 10-all but three straight unforced errors from BYU put USC in front by three once again, 13-10. A triple block put match point on the board for the Trojans at 14-11. The Cougars saved one, but a service error ended the match, 15-12, for the Trojans. Klein had three kills in the fifth and USC hit .250 (5k, 2e, 12att). BYU had nine kills (5e, 21att) but hit .190 thanks to 3.5 USC blocks and four Trojan digs.

UP NEXT

USC returns home to host fifth-ranked Pepperdine (20-5, 10-1 MPSF) for Senior Night at Galen Center on Thursday (April 16). The teams will meet at 7 p.m. PT and be shown live on Big Ten Plus. The Trojans will pay a return visit to the Waves' home court at Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday (April 18) for a 6 p.m. PT match on the Waves' senior night.

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 30-52 all-time against BYU and have won five og the last six meetings with the Cougars.
The Trojans moved to 4-2 in road matches this spring.
USC improved to 9-4 in matches against ranked opponents and to 2-4 against teams ranked in the top 10.
