April 25, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Grant Govel took a perfect game into the eighth inning and ended up with 8.0 scoreless frames to power the No. 23 USC baseball team past Purdue, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
Govel gave up a pair of hits with one out in the eighth, but settled back in to strand both runners as the Trojans move to 33-11 on the year and 15-8 in Big Ten play with the win. Purdue falls to 28-14, 15-8 after suffering its second loss in Los Angeles.
Making his 11th start of the year, Govel struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk on the day as he moves to 8-1 on the season. The sophomore righty now owns a 2.69 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP, with 68 strikeouts and just eight walks on the year.
The USC offense got going early, putting up three runs in the first as the Trojans got RBI from Jack Basseer and Abbrie Covarrubias. Kevin Takeuchi made it a 5-0 USC lead with a two-run homer in the third inning.
The Trojans would add a sixth run in the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch, before Purdue finally got on the board in the ninth following Govel's exit from the game.
Takeuchi's homer was his second in two games against the Boilermakers. Covarrubias also had a three-hit day for the Trojans.
